Danielle gently stroked her daughter’s hair, her eyes softening. “He will, sweetheart. As long as he’s willing, I know he’ll get better in time.”

“For now, what we need to do is live our own lives, okay?”

Niki nodded vigorously. “Okay! Mom, I love our new home. We’ll never have to be apart again!”

As night deepened, Niki was fast asleep, her quiet breaths falling evenly on the pillow.

Danielle sat at the desk in the living room, her head bent over tomorrow’s paperwork for her first day at the Space Agency. The gentle scratch of her pen on paper was the only sound in the room.

Suddenly, her phone buzzed across the tabletop. Gian’s name flashed on the screen.

She picked up, fingertips still smudged with a trace of ink. “Did you make it to Nexus Prime?” Gian’s familiar warmth came through the line.

Danielle gathered the scattered files, answering calmly, “Yeah, we’re settled in.”

She paused, unable to resist teasing him. “What’s wrong? Miss your ‘ex-colleague’ already? I’ve only been gone a few days.”

Gian’s laughter rang out, but there was a weight to it she hadn’t noticed before. “Of course I miss you. But there’s something else—”

“No matter what, you’re still a Ninesky shareholder. That won’t change.”

Danielle’s hand froze mid-motion, her brow tightening. “Why bring that up all of a sudden? Is something going on with Ninesky?”

A flicker of unease crept into her chest. Gian was always direct; mentioning her shareholder status out of nowhere could only mean something was up.

He hesitated for a few seconds, the silence stretching between them, night pressing in from both ends of the call. When he spoke again, his voice was lower, laced with reluctance, but he didn’t hide the truth. “After you left Northridge, Alexander was in a car accident.”

The words landed like a stone in Danielle’s stomach.
