She told him about the time she’d been buried under the snow.
He’d accused her with that same cold, contemptuous tone, scolding her for lying just to trick him into coming back.
Thinking about it now, she realized the way he’d replied to that WhatsApp message must have been exactly how he looked right now.
She checked in with herself. Surprisingly, it didn’t hurt.
Maybe the pain that day had been so sharp, she’d gone numb to it since.
It was right then that Charles caught up—just in time to overhear Landon’s venom-laced remark.
Charles lifted a hand and pressed it wearily to his face.
Impossible! There was simply no managing his boss—such a piece of work was beyond saving.
God really was fair. Sure, he’d given the CEO a face out of a magazine and a family name that opened every door, but He’d also blessed him with a mouth that never failed to say the wrong thing.
He’d been so worried about Zinnia he’d nearly lost it, and in front of outsiders, he’d put on a perfect performance. But the moment he was alone with Zinnia, his mask slipped away.
If a man like this didn’t end up single, who would?
Charles scrubbed a hand down his face with frustration, ready to step forward and patch things up for his hopeless boss.
But before he could, Zinnia let out a soft, amused laugh.
“I’m perfectly fine, Mr. Ford. No need to curse me.”
With that, she turned and continued toward the exit.
Today was the day Dapper was finally being discharged from the animal hospital, and since she wasn’t scheduled at the clinic, she’d planned to pick him up.
“Mrs. Ford! Mrs. Ford!” Charles hurried after her, blocking her path.
“Charles,” Zinnia greeted him with a nod.
“Mrs. Ford, the boss hasn’t slept a wink all night. He’s just cranky—said some things he didn’t mean. Please don’t take it to heart.”
Landon’s brow twitched, but he kept silent, face unreadable.
“Last night, Mr. Ford rushed over to Harbor Town for an emergency project. The moment he finished the morning meeting and heard you were in trouble, he came straight back here,” Charles added, flashing a sheepish smile.
