Is this what they call reaping what you sow?
Landon let out a wry chuckle, but just as he reached the door, he paused again.
“Oh, there was something I almost forgot to mention.”
Zinnia looked at him curiously. “What is it?”
“Tomorrow’s the weekend. The company’s hosting our annual team-building event, and this time, employees are bringing their families.”
As he spoke, Landon’s gaze dropped, a hint of guilt flickering across his face.
“I took Dapper to the office today, and after the PR team shared our photos, the rumors about us started to die down.”
His lips pressed into a thin line, and he avoided meeting Zinnia’s eyes, his lashes hiding the uncertainty that lingered there.
“The PR team thinks it would help if we went to the team-building together tomorrow. It’s a good chance to put those rumors about our marriage breaking up to rest.”
Finished, he looked at Zinnia, his expression almost pleading. “Would you…would you be willing to go?”
Zinnia looked at Landon, suddenly seeing a reflection of her past self on his face.
She’d been like this once—carefully searching for excuses, tiptoeing around him, afraid of being turned down.
She never imagined there’d come a day when their roles would be reversed.
But there was a difference.
Back then, she’d done it to grow closer to him.
He was doing it to protect Ford Group.
It hit her with a cold clarity: for Landon, the most important thing wasn’t Noelle. It was Ford Group.
For Ford Group, Landon was willing to swallow his pride, to tread carefully around her.
He was afraid she wouldn’t cooperate. He was even willing to help look after Dapper, to humble himself for her sake.
