But in the very next second, he frowned and pulled away from her touch.
What was Noelle doing here?
A flicker of annoyance passed through Landon’s eyes, but mindful of the occasion, he said nothing. After sidestepping Noelle’s hand, he moved around the car and opened the door on the other side.
He bent down, reaching inside the car. The sharp edge in his demeanor softened instantly as he spoke to the person inside.
“Don’t worry. Just stay close to me,” Landon said gently to Zinnia, his posture slightly stooped.
Zinnia wasn’t exactly nervous, but this was her first time at such a high-profile event, and she couldn’t help feeling a bit uneasy. In previous years, she’d never attended the Ford Group’s annual gala. If Landon didn’t mention it, she certainly wouldn’t bring it up herself.
But this was the company’s eightieth anniversary—a huge milestone, with even more people and more significance than usual. Still, she reminded herself that, with the divorce looming, this would be the only time she had to play the role. If she could just get through tonight, it would all be over soon.
With that thought in mind, she handed Dapper, the small dog cradled in her arms, to Landon, then carefully gathered up the hem of her gown and stepped out of the car.
“Mrs. Ford is here too.”
“And Mr. Ford brought his brother-in-law along as well,” someone joked, the atmosphere relaxed and cheerful.
Yet, some people exchanged knowing looks when it came to Noelle, and a few couldn’t help but feel secondhand embarrassment for her.
After all, Landon had arrived with his wife. Who would want to make an entrance with someone else? What a ridiculous idea.
But even though that’s what they were thinking, no one dared say anything openly. No one could quite figure out Landon’s true feelings for Noelle—the childhood friend he’d brought to the company gala year after year—so everyone just kept their thoughts to themselves.
