Noelle’s carefully worded insinuation was so transparent, it was almost laughable.
Was she really trying to tell everyone that Zinnia had cheated on Landon, sneaking off to a hotel with another man behind his back?
Zinnia frowned, her patience wearing thin.
She knew she had nothing to hide—her conscience was clear—but there was nothing she could do to stop people like Noelle from flinging mud wherever they could. Worse still, she’d dragged poor Yuri into the mess as well.
Noticing Zinnia’s frown, Noelle assumed her little scheme was working. The corners of her mouth flickered into a victorious smile.
As more and more people stopped to watch the unfolding drama, Noelle’s confidence grew. She clung to her pitiful act, her voice tremulous as she continued, “I’m not here to complain to Landon. I just thought he seemed so desperate to find you, so I kindly told him where you were. I never expected him to get so angry—or to take it out on my family.”
She tightened her grip on Zinnia’s arm, her eyes brimming with tears as she pleaded, “Zinnia, even though you betrayed Landon, he still cares about you—he listens to you more than anyone. Please, could you talk to him? Ask him not to take this out on my family. My dad’s business is struggling as it is—I really don’t want our company to go under just because of you.”
Zinnia stared at her, momentarily speechless at the melodramatic display.
Did Noelle invest all her intelligence into perfecting her acting skills?
How could she possibly believe that, after slinging so much dirt at her, Zinnia would then turn around and plead Landon’s mercy on her behalf?
And besides, since when would Landon actually go so far as to threaten his childhood sweetheart’s family business? Was Noelle just making that up, or did she know something Zinnia didn’t?
“Poor Xander Jensen,” Zinnia said suddenly, cutting through Noelle’s performance with a pointed remark.
Noelle’s routine faltered for a split second. She stared at Zinnia in confusion, forgetting to keep up her tears.
