“I actually saw a guy today who looks just like you—same age as my brother, even has the last name Ford. What are the odds?” Leanna’s eyes sparkled with mischief as she spoke.
Then, with a gasp, she covered her mouth dramatically. “Dad, don’t tell me you had a fling ages ago, and the woman ran off with your baby, raised the kid overseas in secret, and now—after all these years—she’s come back with your long-lost son to reclaim everything you owe her?”
Almost immediately, she frowned and shook her head. “Wait, that doesn’t make sense. If your one-night-stand was that determined, why would she wait twenty years to show up? That would make her…not the brightest, huh?”
Yale was speechless, staring at her in exasperation.
“Where do you even get these crazy ideas?” he finally demanded.
“My best friend writes stories like that on this app. They’re wild—millions of views! Dad, do you want me to send you a link—wait, no, focus! We’re getting off track.”
Whew, that was close—she almost let him sidetrack her.
“Dad, don’t try to change the subject. Be honest with me—”
“Honest about what, exactly?” Yale cut her off, completely losing patience. “Do you even listen to yourself? What goes on in that head of yours all day?”
Leanna just pouted and looked away.
Honestly, what filled her mind all day was her collection of adorable boyfriends—obviously.
Catching sight of her father’s face, now flushed with frustration, Leanna hesitated, her tone suddenly more tentative.
“Dad, you really don’t have a secret son out there, do you?”
Yale shot her a look that said, “One more word and I’ll disown you,” and Leanna, sensing she’d pushed enough, fell silent.
She rested her chin in her hand, musing aloud, “If it’s not you, could it be Grandpa?”
Yale just stared at her, at a loss for words.
