Yale looked distinctly uneasy.
“I mean… isn’t this a bit much? What if we’re wrong? Dad would lose his mind if we brought this up and it turned out to be nothing.”
“But what if we’re right?” Lacey’s curiosity was piqued, too.
Imagine suddenly discovering an unknown uncle. If the guy was harmless, fine—but what if he had ambitions? These years, Landon had managed the Ford Group perfectly. If someone new showed up trying to snatch the inheritance, it would be bad news for both the Ford Group and the Ford family as a whole.
It’s not like high-society families haven’t seen their fair share of ugly inheritance battles. The Fords were practically the only ones left who’d managed to keep things peaceful.
Lacey’s worries echoed Yale’s own. Inheritance wars could get brutal—sometimes people even turned on their own siblings for a bigger share.
That was the last thing Yale wanted to see.
“How about… I ask Leanna to sneak me over for a look? Just to check things out. Maybe it really is just a coincidence—maybe he only looks like us.”
“I’ll talk to Leanna, see what’s actually going on.”
But before either of them could put a plan into motion, Leanna was already sweet-talking Zane into making a grand gesture.
“Grandpa, I heard Zinnia’s teaching now—she’s a professor at Veridian University’s School of Medicine. Why not donate a new lab building to the med school in her name? It’ll be a wonderful way to support her work.”
Zane agreed instantly. “Good idea. The building can be part of Zinnia’s wedding dowry. Especially now that she and your clueless older brother have signed the divorce papers.”
“Exactly!” Leanna’s eyes sparkled. “And you should go in person for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.”
“Of course.”
Meanwhile, Zinnia and Landon were at the property office, transferring all the real estate out of his name.
As they signed the paperwork, Zinnia could feel the staff glancing at her, their expressions a little different now—maybe even respectful.
When they walked out, Landon turned to her, hesitating for a moment before speaking.
“Let me drive you back to campus.”
