She stepped forward, about to ask Cozy what she was doing here, when her mother, Jessica, spoke up first.
“Your dad and I invited Yuri over for dinner today. Honestly, you slept in so late that poor Yuri had to wait at the door forever.”
“Huh?” Zinnia was still a bit dazed.
Just last night, one of her students had called her right after getting home, eager to discuss the direction of a new research project. The student’s ideas were fresh, conversation flowed, and Zinnia didn’t have the heart to interrupt, even as the hour grew late.
By the time they wrapped up, it was nearly three in the morning.
Since the project involved some neurosurgery concepts outside her expertise, she’d forwarded the student’s question to Yuri, thinking he’d reply the next day. To her surprise, Yuri responded almost immediately.
That kicked off another phone call—this one long and deeply technical. Yuri shared a wealth of knowledge, and Zinnia listened intently, genuinely interested.
Eventually, she was so exhausted that she drifted off mid-conversation, not even sure when the call ended. She’d completely forgotten that her parents had mentioned inviting Yuri for dinner.
Now, remembering how much of Yuri’s time she’d monopolized last night—and how she’d fallen asleep without so much as a goodbye—Zinnia felt a little sheepish.
She noticed Yuri helping out in the kitchen and was just about to join him when the doorbell rang.
Changing direction, Zinnia went to answer it. She paused in surprise at the sight of the person waiting outside.
“Mr. Ford.” She blurted the formal greeting, surprise coloring her tone.
Landon’s eyes flickered—an emotion too subtle to read. “I heard your parents are home these days. I thought I’d drop by to see them.”
