“Well, cousin, what a coincidence—what brings you to my in-laws’ house?”
He put extra emphasis on the words “my in-laws,” as if he was deliberately staking his claim in front of Yuri.
Yuri didn’t bother to argue with him. He simply replied, straightforward as always, “Elijah and Jessica invited me over for dinner. I didn’t expect you to be here too. Did they invite you as well, cousin?”
The question made Landon’s expression falter for a moment, a trace of embarrassment flickering across his face. Compared to the warmth of Yuri’s invitation, Landon’s unannounced appearance seemed almost laughable.
Elijah was busy in the kitchen and hadn’t come out yet. Jessica, meanwhile, watched the verbal sparring between the two men with growing discomfort.
Just as she was about to say something to ease the tension, Yuri suddenly waved toward the sofa.
“Cozy, come here.”
As soon as the name “Cozy” was called, Landon instinctively glanced at Zinnia, as if searching her face for a reaction.
But instead of Zinnia, it was the Devon Rex cat—currently sprawled across Dapper’s back, kicking its legs with abandon—that responded. The cat chirped in reply, then awkwardly scampered over to Yuri, moving with exaggerated enthusiasm.
Yuri crouched down and scooped Cozy into his arms, nuzzling the cat affectionately. “No mischief today, all right? You’re only getting this meal thanks to me, so be grateful, okay?”
Cozy, of course, didn’t understand a word, but that didn’t stop it from purring and meowing back with all the affection in the world.
Landon, however, caught the implication in Yuri’s words immediately.
He let out a short, incredulous laugh, already irritated. But when he realized Yuri had named his cat “Cozy”—the same nickname Zinnia once had—his face darkened even more.
