She had no idea how much time had passed before the storm inside her finally began to ease. Gritting her teeth, she forced herself to keep moving forward.
Suddenly, a familiar figure appeared in her line of sight.
He was dressed in simple work clothes, dust and debris clinging to every inch of the fabric. The wire-rimmed glasses he always wore with such care were now smeared with thick layers of grime.
Clutching a shovel, he was desperately trying to dig through the rubble. Where the shovel or the excavators couldn’t reach, he simply used his bare hands, tearing at the dirt and stones. With each lifeless body pulled from the ruins, the despair on his face deepened.
“Landon?”
Zinnia’s voice trembled, barely louder than a whisper.
But somehow, as if he’d felt her presence, he suddenly froze and looked her way.
The moment Landon saw Zinnia, he went completely still, squatting there like a statue.
His fingers, cut and bloodied by the rocks, dripped red down into the dust.
Then, suddenly, he tore off his glasses. Behind the lenses, his bloodshot eyes locked onto Zinnia—so raw, so wounded, it looked as if he might start weeping tears of blood at any second.
Zinnia never imagined she’d see Landon here, in this place, at this moment.
He looked utterly exhausted and lost, shrouded in a gray, defeated haze. She couldn't tell how long he’d been wearing those clothes—they were filthy and tattered, hanging off him in shreds.
What was he doing here?
Even as the question flashed through her mind, she was yanked into a cold, desperate embrace.
“Baby, you’re okay… I’m so sorry… I’ve been looking everywhere for you, but I couldn’t find you…”
Landon’s words tumbled out, broken and shaking, his voice trembling right against her ear.
