Life went on. After a period of recovery, Zinnia returned to her job at Veridian University Affiliated Hospital, and everything seemed to be falling back into a familiar rhythm.
Throughout this time, Landon showed no signs of waking. According to the doctors, the rock that had struck his frontal lobe had caused severe brain damage. A large blood clot had formed, one that the body couldn’t absorb on its own. Surgery was an option, but it came with a high risk of leaving him in a permanent vegetative state. So while most of his bodily functions were slowly recovering, the pressure from the clot on his brain kept him unconscious.
Even if he did wake up, he would likely suffer from other complications, such as severe cognitive impairment or behavioral abnormalities. The location of the injury was treacherous; the slightest misstep could be fatal. Not even the world’s top neurosurgeons were willing to risk the procedure.
When Zinnia heard this news, she showed little reaction, as if listening to gossip about a stranger.
One day, after seeing her last patient, Zinnia walked out of her office. As she looked up, she saw Yuri standing in the hallway, watching her. His gaze was heavy with a faint, lingering sadness.
When he saw her looking, he unconsciously straightened up, a hint of unease in his posture. He forced a smile. “…Zinnia.”
“Can I help you, Mr. Ford?” Zinnia asked, her tone cold and distant.
