“Hello? Noelle?”
Noelle’s voice on the other end was sharp and accusatory.
“Are you the reason Landon isn’t answering my calls?”
Zinnia blinked in disbelief. “Excuse me?”
“It must be you! You told Landon something, didn’t you? That’s why he’s ignoring me now.”
Noelle didn’t bother hiding her irritation anymore. Gone was the meek, innocent act she usually put on around Zinnia.
Maybe Landon’s sudden refusal to pick up her calls tonight had rattled her so much that she didn’t even care to pretend.
“Noelle, if Landon isn’t answering your calls, maybe you should ask him about it—not me.” Zinnia kept her tone calm and steady.
“Landon never ignores me. He would never do this unless you said something to him!” Noelle’s voice was brimming with self-righteousness, which made Zinnia laugh despite herself.
“Noelle, haven’t you always claimed you’re more important to Landon than I am? Are you really saying a few words from me could change his mind?”
That question caught Noelle off guard. She was momentarily speechless, the confidence she’d always flaunted in front of Zinnia suddenly nowhere to be found.
After all, Noelle had always paraded herself as Landon’s favorite, always basking in the smug sense of superiority whenever Zinnia was around. Admitting that Zinnia could sway Landon more than she could was out of the question.
“So, where’s all that confidence now, Noelle?” Zinnia chuckled, and Noelle’s frustration was almost palpable through the phone.
Noelle stared at her phone, torn between fury and disbelief. Zinnia had never dared to provoke her like this before.
She always thought that if Zinnia ever spoke to her so rudely, Landon would be furious. That’s why she’d repeatedly found excuses to pull Landon away from Zinnia, and Zinnia had never dared to protest.
The only explanation for Zinnia’s sudden boldness tonight was Landon’s refusal to answer her calls—it must have given Zinnia the wrong idea.
How dare you, Zinnia? How dare you!
Noelle, shaking with rage, hurled her phone at the wall.
The screen shattered instantly, spiderweb cracks spreading across the glass.
