"What happened last time was just a misunderstanding, Jayden. I was immature, and things got out of hand. Can you forgive me?" Hazel rested her head against his shoulder, tears blurring her vision.
"I've been reflecting on myself these past few days. You treated me so well, yet I treated you as a fallback. I was too shallow and vain, desperate for attention. That's why I did something so foolish," she said.
Jayden tried to pull away, but she held him so tightly that he didn't have the heart to break free.
He asked, his voice low and tense, "What exactly are you trying to say?"
"I like you!" Hazel looked up at him, eyes full of hurt. "It wasn't until I left the intensive training camp that I realized you were the only one I've ever liked. I've cut ties with the others. I won't contact them again. Will you forgive me, Jayden?"
Jayden's expression twisted with discomfort. He hadn't expected Hazel to confess to him like this.
But he wasn't a naive fool—he didn't completely believe her. "You didn't sneak out to the back hill to meet me just to say all these, right?"
Hazel lowered her gaze, looking a little conflicted. "I actually have a favor to ask… But it's not just for me. It's for you, too."
Jayden frowned in confusion.
She looked at him intently. "At the International Grand Prix in three months, if Noelle's there, she'll run the entire intensive training camp. She knows you like me, she won't let you off, so you can't let her compete!"
He faltered at her words.
Tears welled in Hazel's eyes. "As long as she's gone from the intensive training camp, you'll be the captain of the Flame Speed Racing team. Don't you want to stand on the international stage one day and become one of the best racers? That's the dream we all share."
Jayden hesitated before replying, "Even without Ms. Quinn around, Alexis is more skilled than me. There's also Derrick from the Swift Racing team. There's no way I'd become the captain."
"What about me?" Hazel cupped his face, her gaze filled with affection. "I like you, but because of Noelle, I'm being sent back to the basic training camp. I may never get the chance to participate in the International Grand Prix anymore. Do I really deserve that?"
Jayden was taken aback. "But…"
The next second, Hazel rose on her tiptoes and pressed her lips to his.
Jayden froze as if he was struck by lightning.
She kissed the corner of his mouth. "I'm doing this for you, Jayden. Noelle ruined me to this extent, and she'll keep holding you back, too. She treats everyone better than you because she knows that I like you."
Her eyes glistened with tears as she slipped a small medicine vial into his hands.
"What is this?" Jayden asked, startled.
"It's a slow-acting poison, colorless and tasteless. All you have to do is slip it into her drinks every day. In less than a month, her body will act up and she won't be able to compete anymore."
