Too Good for You: The Ex-Wife You Lost novel Chapter 13

"Please go ahead," Brad said.

"Thunderscape Group's sixth anniversary gala is two days from now. Clifford's been preparing for it for months, so I'd like you and the other partners to grace the celebration with your presence.

"Since I was the one who secured all these partnerships, I want a chance to stand there, speak for myself, and have you all as witnesses. Consider it doing me a personal favor," Noelle said with a grin.

Clifford had an affair during their marriage, so she wasn't about to let him off the hook so easily.

The anniversary invitation cards from Thunderscape Group had been sent out weeks before to all the partner companies.

Typically, companies would just send a representative to such events, but since Noelle had made a request personally, Brad had no reason to refuse.

He smiled. "You have my word, Ms. Quinn. I'll inform the rest of the CEOs in our circle, and we'll all be there."

As night fell, Zayne lay on the hospital bed. The anesthesia was wearing off, so the sharp, persistent pain made him toss and turn. His stomach growled loudly with hunger.

Clifford was on a phone call in the corner of the ward, agitatedly issuing orders to a subordinate and completely oblivious to Zayne's suffering.

Silently, Zayne slid out of bed and padded toward the door. As he passed the next ward, he heard a kid wailing inside, "It hurts so much, Mom…"

He stopped in his tracks.

In the ward, a middle-aged woman immediately gathered the sobbing kid and coaxingly said, "It's okay, my baby. I made you some bone broth. Drink a little, and you'll feel better.

"Here, taste it. Is it good?"

Clutching his stomach, Zayne could almost smell the rich, savory broth. He licked his lips and thought about when Noelle was here. She never let him go hungry and always tried new recipes to make him delicious food.

Though he'd hit her with the cup today and made her upset, he thought she'd surely come running back to cook for him if he cried like that kid.

That thought made his stomach growl loudly again. It'd just been a few days without Noelle, yet Zayne already missed her cooking terribly.
