Clearly, Noelle's words were tempting, especially to a boy around Zayne's age.
But as soon as he recalled what Lola told him, he scowled. "Hmph. I don't want your junk! I have plenty of racecar models already.
"Ms. Perez, please throw that thing she brought straight into the trash."
Lola pretended to hesitate. "Zayne, isn't that a bit much?"
That only made him bristle like an angry cub. Sliding off the couch, he glared at Lola and shouted, "What's wrong with it? Dad said I shouldn't take anything from that woman. They're all filthy!"
He snatched the gift box from Lola and hurled it to the floor, stomping on it until it was crushed and marked with footprints.
Noelle's heart sank. She felt as though her heart had been shattered into a million pieces.
She staggered back a few steps, and even her voice sounded unfamiliar to her.
"Zayne… Do you really not want me as your mom anymore?" she asked, her voice sounding unfamiliar even to herself.
Zayne's face twisted in disgust.
"That's right. I don't want you as my mom. Having Ms. Perez is enough!"
He clutched Lola's leg tightly. "She's my real mom."
Bitterness surged through Noelle. She should've expected this.
"Fine." She let out a forced chuckle. "Don't worry. I won't disturb your family again."
With that, she turned and walked away, as though she'd never come in the first place. But her lonely silhouette carried an air of desolation about her.
For a brief moment, guilt pricked at Zayne's heart.
After all, Noelle had raised him. It was impossible for him not to feel anything about his mother.
But Clifford and Lola had told him repeatedly that Noelle had become a bad person. She was selling herself to rich old men for money, and he felt ashamed to have such a mother.
His gaze flicked to the smashed gift box.
"This brand is really expensive!" Lola gasped. "The box is ruined, but the models inside should still be intact. Why don't you keep it? After all, it's a gift from your mom."
With a smile, she added, "She worked hard to buy it, you know. Pleasing those old men isn't easy."
The faintest flicker of hesitation on Zayne's face vanished instantly. He steeled his resolve and frowned.
"I can't be bothered!"
He swerved around and went back to his game.
