Too Good for You: The Ex-Wife You Lost novel Chapter 90

Hunter kept retreating to avoid contact with Maxine. "Where is Noelle? Let her go."

Maxine's eyes flashed with malice, though it vanished in an instant. She looked wounded. "We've known each other for years. After all this time apart, you don't even ask how I've been. Why is your teammate the first person you ask about? Is there actually something going on between you two?"

She continued without waiting for Hunter's input. "According to the rules, this isn't your place to interfere, Hunter. You should be averting suspicion. I questioned Noelle. She's a divorced woman with a child. If your parents find out that a woman like her is clinging to you, tell me, do you think she'll have any peace?"

Hunter's gaze was cold as he looked at her. "Are you threatening me?" He let out a mirthless laugh. "I left the Haberkorn family when I was 17. I have nothing to do with them anymore. What I do is none of their business."

Maxine frowned. "But, what about our engagement? Hunter, I'm your fiancée!"

As she spoke, she tried to throw herself at Hunter. But he grabbed her by her hand. "I've never been engaged, and I've never had a fiancée. Go find whoever made that arrangement with you. Don't pin it on me."

With that, he flung her hand away so forcefully that she lost her balance and staggered back several steps.

Maxine's eyes brimmed with tears. "Have you truly fallen for that woman?" She murmured with feigned innocence, "What's so good about her? She's just a woman abandoned by her husband. She's clinging to you because she's attracted to your looks and your family's wealth! Hunter…"

"Enough!" Hunter fixed a menacing gaze on Maxine. "I won't allow anyone to speak ill of her."

The sight of him standing firmly in Noelle's defense made Maxine's heart lurch with shock.

She had known Hunter for years. Yet, she had never seen him defend anyone so strongly!

She wiped away her tears and argued stubbornly, "You heard Xavier. The review isn't over. Everything must follow the procedure. It won't make a difference no matter how impatient you are."

She paused before saying, "Besides, this concerns your reputation. Unless she's willing to admit that she seduced you, your parents won't let her off even if you want to shield her." She smiled through her tears. "Do you truly mean to stand against your parents for a woman like her, Hunter?"

Hunter stared coldly at her. "I despise being threatened the most, Maxine."

His voice was ice cold as he declared, "I'll submit my resignation to the national team's coaching department and issue a public statement. Noelle had never once made any advances toward me. I was the one who harbored feelings for her. If anyone crossed the line, it would only ever be me."

His expression was frigid beyond measure. "None of this has anything to do with Noelle."

Maxine felt her mind go blank. It felt as though all the blood in her body had rushed to her head.
