Xavier’s smile vanished, his dark eyes fixed on Aveline.

Aveline met his gaze coldly.

After a moment, the corner of Xavier’s mouth curved up. “So, 150,000 dollars is all it takes to buy Eileen’s con- science. Her conscience sure is cheap.”

The moment Aveline heard that, she knew he didn’t believe for a second that Josie would pay for an attack.

Even though Josie’s intention was for her to miscarry, she couldn’t have been unaware that when Eileen stuck her foot out to trip her, it could have not only caused a miscarriage but also killed her.

Massive bleeding from a miscarriage can be fatal, and so can hitting your head hard in a fall.

Aveline let out a dry laugh. “Do this buyer and seller even have a conscience?”

Xavier frowned slightly. “One of them is your half–sister, and the other is your paternal cousin. Don’t let your imagi- nation run wild.”

“Where did you get this recording? Don’t let someone with an agenda use you.”

Aveline gave Xavier a look like he was an idiot, pitying how his IQ had dropped to zero after falling into Josie’s trap.

If he’d heard a similar recording in a business context, his intelligence would have made it impossible for him not to figure out what was going on.

Even though Aveline had no feelings left for Xavier, she still kind of envied that someone as vile as Josie could have a man so devoted to her.

Chapter 222

Aveline suddenly wanted to see what Xavier’s reaction would be the day he discovered Josie’s true colors.

She turned to open the bedroom door.

Xavier said from behind her, “Send me the recording. I’ll have Claude Steele look into it.”

Aveline didn’t want to deal with the idiot. She walked into the bedroom and closed the door.

Xavier heard the lock click from inside.

His dark eyes stared deeply at the closed door for a moment, then he walked a few steps and went into the bedroom next door.

Aveline came out of the shower and saw a call from Jacob. Since she didn’t answer, he sent a string of angry texts as

usual.

[Aveline, how dare you let your paternal cousin go to jail. You better watch your back when you go out. Don’t let me, your daddy, see you.]

[If I see you, I’ll definitely teach you a lesson for your dead mother and beat you up.]

[Aveline, you’re dead to me, you hear?]

Aveline stared at it coldly, feeling nothing, only thinking that Jacob was just an incompetent, raging asshole.

She took some iodine from the first–aid kit to clean her wound, then got into bed to sleep.

She lay there looking at the ceiling, wondering if she should ask Fiona tomorrow if she could apply to change her last name to her mother’s.

It probably wouldn’t affect her fight for her mom’s inheritance, right?

And how was she going to explain to her maternal grandparents that she wanted to divorce Xavier?

If she told her maternal grandparents that Xavier and Josephine were having an affair, the old couple probably could- n’t take it.
