Chapter 280
Josephine and Gerald were both taken aback.
“Xav…”
Xavier looked at Josephine. “You go out first.”
His tone left no room for argument.
Helpless, Josephine glanced at a confused Gerald, bit her lip, and walked out of the study looking Wronged.
After Josephine left, Xavier walked over to the sofa. He unbuttoned his suit jacket as he sat down, placing his wine glass on the coffee table.
He said coldly, “Close the door.”
Gerald gave him a confused look and went to shut the door.
Seeing this from outside the door, Josephine froze. It looked like Xavier had something important to say to Gerald, something he didn’t want anyone else to hear.
Xavier wasn’t blaming Gerald for bringing her, was he?
Josephine felt a little uneasy, but she quickly dismissed the feeling with a slight smile.
Even if Xavier was upset, he would only blame Gerald, not her.
Ever since Xavier started thinking Aveline had deceived him, he had been very good to her.
As long as it didn’t cross any moral or legal boundaries, you could say he’d grant her almost anything she asked for
Feeling reassured, Josephine headed toward the living room.
In the study, Gerald sat on the other sofa, facing Xavier’s cold, indifferent expression.
“Man, what’s wrong?
You’re not blaming me for bringing Josie over, are you?”
Xavier shot back, “Then why did you bring her?”

Gerald stared at Xavier, surprised “You really didn’t want her to come?”
“If I wanted her to come, why wouldn’t I have sent her an invitation?”
“Come on, you were just worried the Patriarch would be upset.
Her coming as my date works out perfectly, doesn’t it?
From what I saw, the Patriarch wasn’t that upset.”
Xavier said flatly. “It’s his birthday banquet. Is he really going to kick a guest out?”

Gerald leaned forward. “I’m telling you, Josie gave the Patriarch a painting by Alfred. She put a lot of thought into it. I think the Patriarch could see how sincere she was.”
“And stop with the long face. She’s here now, anyway.”
“Was it Aveline? Did she get mad and say something to you?”
Xavier couldn’t help but laugh, a hint of mockery in his voice. “So you deliberately brought Josephine over just to piss off Aveline?”
“Hmph. If it pisses her off, all the better.
But the main reason was that Josie wanted to be here for the Patriarch’s birthday celebration.”
“She originally thought your family would invite her dad, and then he would bring her and her mom for the Patriarch’s birthday celebration. The birthday gift was ready ages ago–that painting by Alfred. But who knew you wouldn’t send her dad an invitation.”
“She seemed pretty down about it, and the birthday gift was all ready, so I just brought her along.”
“It’s Courtney that the Patriarch and your mom don’t like, right? They wouldn’t hold anything against someone from the younger generation, so it’s not a big deal for Josie to be here.”
Xavier stared at Gerald as he rambled on, his dark eyes growing colder and colder. He waited until Gerald finally finished his self–righteous spiel.
Xavier said in a cold voice, “Gerald, how the hell did you graduate from law school? How did you even pass the bar? You’re acting like a complete idiot.
The moment the words left his mouth. Xavier remembered Aveline had called him the same thing: a dim–witted fool
Xavier’s brow furrowed slightly. It seemed Aveline’s influence was rubbing off on him; the words had just slipped out.

When Gerald saw Xavier frown, he realized he was genuinely angry. “Hey, the Patriarch didn’t even get mad, so why are you blowing up?”
