Aveline Sutton arrived at Winslow Heights and had the Beltran Group Beltran family late Mr. Beltran concierge swipe his card to activate the elevator for her again.
The concierge still respectfully called her “Mrs. Beltran,” unaware that she no longer lived there.
The elevator reached the 18th floor. As she stepped out, Josephine Sutton emerged from the apartment across the hall.
Josephine gave her a dark look, but Aveline ignored it and walked toward Xavier Beltran’s apartment.
Josephine sneered, “Aveline, if you couldn’t bear to leave, why did you bother? Now you’re using a child to come back. How shameless.”
Aveline didn’t look at her or say a word, just coldly rang the doorbell.
Xavier opened the door. Aveline entered with her eyes lowered, not looking at him as she walked straight in.
Behind her, Josephine said in a cheerful tone, “Darling, you said my sister was coming to make Savory Fried Rice and cupcakes. My mouth was watering, so I came over.”
It was as if she wasn’t the same person who had just been sneering at Aveline with an ugly expression and a nasty
tone.
Valentina Henderson was on the sofa watching cartoons on a tablet. When she saw Aveline come in, she quickly got off the couch and ran toward her with a big smile.
“Aveline, you’re back.”
Valentina hugged Aveline’s leg and looked up at her.
Aveline’s cold heart instantly warmed. She crouched down and gently stroked Valentina’s head. “Good girl, Valenti- na. I’m going to the kitchen now to make you Savory Fried Rice and cupcakes.”
Valentina let go of Aveline and, seeing the groceries she’d bought, said, “Aveline, Uncle already bought the ingredi- ents for the Savory Fried Rice and cupcakes.”
Aveline just hummed in acknowledgment and said nothing more, getting up and heading to the kitchen.
Valentina saw Josephine and Xavier walk in together. She just looked at her without speaking.
Xavier said, “Valentina, say hello.”
Valentina had no choice but to say, “Hi, Josie.”
She was just unhappy because she remembered Mason Harmon Prevost saying bad things about Aveline for Josephine’s sake,

Chapter St
Josephine walked over to Valentina, looking down at her and forcing a smile. “Valentina, Josie came over to have Sa- vory Fried Rice and cupcakes with you.‘
Valentina didn’t run up and hug her like she had with Aveline, and Josephine felt a little resentful.
To please Xavier, Aveline had spent years doing everything she could to suck up to the, but in the end, only this little girl had been won over by her.
Valentina just said, “Oh,” then turned and went back to the sofa to continue watching her cartoons.
Josephine’s face stiffened.
But she wasn’t ready to give up. She walked over and sat down next to Valentina. “Valentina, Josie brought some chocolate for you and your uncle. Do you want some?”
Without looking up, her eyes still on the screen, Valentina said, “I’m going to cat Aveline’s Savory Fried Rice and cupcakes later, so I can’t have snacks.”
Josephine’s heart sank, and she grew annoyed.
But in front of Xavier, she didn’t dare show her displeasure to Valentina, because she knew how much Xavier doted on his niece.
She turned to Xavier and gave him a wronged, bitter smile.
Xavier said, “Just put it on the table. She’ll eat it later.”
Josephine had hoped Xavier would scold Valentina for being rude, but it seemed he couldn’t bring himself to repri- mand his niece.
She had no choice but to place the bag of chocolates on the coffee table.
