Chapter 66
She’d think about buying a house once the company was up and running.
In the evening, just after Jasmine and Julian had left, Xavier called.
Aveline glanced at her phone, didn’t pick it up, and went to the kitchen to make dinner.
The phone rang for a while before stopping. It started ringing again a few seconds later, but she still didn’t answer, and it went silent again.
Then came the sound of a text message.
Aveline remembered Xavier saying last night that the Patriarch was coming back. Thinking it might be a message from him, she went to check her phone.
It was from Xavier: [Why aren’t you back?]
Aveline’s face went cold.
She hadn’t agreed to go back to Winslow Heights last night. What right did he have to demand that?
Just then, another message arrived from Xavier: [The Patriarch’s plane has landed, and he’s coming straight to Winslow Heights. Come back now.]
Aveline didn’t reply. She put down her phone and went back to the kitchen to continue cooking.
Rupert had always been good to her, especially after she saved Xavier’s life. He treated her even better then.
But her decision to divorce Xavier was non–negotiable.
She wouldn’t play along with Xavier’s act to temporarily appease Rupert, just so he could wait for the right moment to make Rupert accept Josephine.
After she finished cooking, she was eating when someone started entering the passcode at the door.
Aveline was startled, her eyes widening as she looked at the door.
Jasmine or Julian?
Did they forget something and come back to get it?
The door opened, and Xavier walked in.
Aveline’s heart, which had been in her throat, settled, but her expression turned cold as she stared at him icily.
Xavier’s indifferent gaze swept over the food on the table. He looked at her. “Didn’t you see my message?”

Chapter 66
Aveline looked at him coldly without speaking, sure that he understood she’d seen it but didn’t want to reply.
Xavier chuckled. “Fine, if you don’t reply, I’ll just come find you.”
“I told them you were working late, and I came to pick you up. The Patriarch and my mom are already on their way to Granvia Restaurant. Let’s go.”
“Close the door on your way out.”
After saying that, Aveline lowered her head and continued to eat.
Xavier’s dark eyes narrowed as he stared at her. “You can be mad at me, but it’s the Patriarch’s first day back. He wants to see you. Are you going to be difficult with him too?”
Aveline said coolly, “Didn’t you tell him we’re getting a divorce?”
Xavier laughed out loud. “We’re not divorced yet, are we?
Is there any point in you constantly bringing it up?”
“I told him he might not believe me, so why don’t you go tell him yourself.”
Aveline thought for a moment and put down her fork.
Although Xavier’s claim that she was being difficult with him annoyed her, she did need to tell the Patriarch in per- son, to prevent the Patriarch from believing Xavier’s story and thinking she was actually being difficult.
Rupert had just returned to the country, so it was proper for her to go and greet him. Otherwise, she would seem a bit
heartless.
It was Xavier who broke her heart, not Rupert.
Aveline went into the bathroom to rinse her mouth, then came out, grabbed her purse, shot Xavier a cold glance, and walked towards the door.
Xavier’s dark eyes were as still as an old well as he followed behind her.
