Chapter 297
As we tried to catch our breaths, Alexander stared at me. His face softened as he gently traced my flushed cheek with the back of his warm hand.
He leaned forward and pressed a soft kiss to my mouth. It was the sweetest thing that I’d ever experienced.
Alexander moved his lips to my right check, then my left, and finally, my forehead. His gentleness just made the ache inside of me grow even more, and I tightly gripped the back of his shirt to bring his face back to mine.
“More,” I demanded.
Alexander grinned, then his mouth swooped to capture my lips. We began to kiss deeply again, our tongues fighting for dominance this time. He tasted like mints and coffee. Our kisses were all consuming and left me breathless.
When he pulled away to trail slow kisses down my sensitive neck, I tried to catch my breath, but it felt like I was in the middle of the deep ocean attempting to tread water. My mind conjured up giant waves and sinking down to the surface. I shook my head, trying to clear it, knowing that I was having these crazy thoughts from lack of oxygen.
After one last soft kiss, Alexander buried his head into my shoulder and breathed me in. We stood like that for a few moments until he eventually put me down.
“How are you feeling?” Alexander asked tentatively as he gently lowered me down to the floor.
He must have noticed my legs were shaking because he grasped my upper arms so I wouldn’t fall.
“Do
you need to lie down?” he asked with concern when I didn’t say anything.
“No…I have to get back to work,” I said and smoothed my dress and hair.

ankle gave out, and I let out a gasp as I fell to the floor.
Hot pain radiated up my leg, and I cursed myself for wearing the highest heels I owned today.

As I hobbled back to my desk, I mumbled about overbearing men and high heels.

When I got back to my desk, I changed into the pink ballet flats that I kept at my desk in case of emergencies. Then, I hobbled to the kitchen to get some ice for my ankle. As the afternoon wore on, the pain in my ankle increased. I could barely put pressure on it without gasping for pain.
I made an appointment at the physical therapist after work, hoping that they would be able to help me. Then, the thought of going back to my apartment tonight–where I was in close proximity to Alexander–made my stomach clench with nerves. I really needed a break from him.
As I wrapped my work up for the day, my eyes fell to the framed picture I had of my parents on my desk. I was struck with inspiration and couldn’t believe that I hadn’t thought of this before.
I called my mom, and she answered on the second ring.
“Hi, Momma,” I said.
“Oh, sweetheart,” she replied, probably knowing that I wasn’t doing well because of my tone of voice and the fact that I hadn’t called her ‘momma‘ in years.
