My mom didn’t hesitate. “Of course you can stay here, sweetheart. You’re my daughter, and I would love to have you.”

My heart lifted, and I knew I made the right decision wanting to come home.

We chatted for a little while longer, and the conversation with my mom lifted my spirits. I needed to visit my parents more anyway.

“Alexander just got called away to a business trip to visit the London branch on Saturday,” she rushed out, as if hearing it quickly would lessen the blow. “Alexander wants you to accompany him.

My shoulders slumped, and I scrubbed a hand down my face.

This was just my luck. My weekend of relaxation and spending time with my parents was ruined. How was I supposed to allow my bruised ankle to heal while I was gallivanting around London with Alexander?

Also, I desperately needed distance from him. I needed to figure out what I truly wanted. These days, Alexander and I were either fighting or making out. That wasn’t the kind of relationship that I wanted.

This alarming news made the room spin around me, and I clutched onto the edge of my desk, trying to get a hold of myself. Why did this trip need to happen now? If I refused, would I still have a job? My track record during business trips with Alexander wasn’t good. The past two times, something always seemed to happen. Alexander and I’s relationship always seemed to change whether for the good or bad. Being alone with Alexander was the opposite of what I needed right now.

“You really don’t want to go on this trip, do you?” she asked after a moment in a quiet voice.

I couldn’t speak right now. The panic rising in my throat was choking me. I simply shook my head.

Gai’s usually bright eyes held sympathy and guilt. She ran her hands down her legs and bit her lip. “I feel like I’ve failed you in some massive way. After all, it was my job to protect you.”

My heart tugged in her direction. Gai was too empathetic for her own good. “The only reason that I don’t want to go on the trip was because I sprained my ankle earlier today.” That was only half of the truth, but I wanted to spare Gai’s sensitive soul.

I scooted over in my chair and shifted the bag of melted ice, which was now just cold water that periodically dropped onto my leg. I showed Gai my left ankle. It was already swollen three times bigger than my right.

Her eyes widened, and she clapped her hand to her mouth in surprise.

“Olivia! That looks horrible. You need to go to the doctor right now! I’ll explain the situation to Alexander. You can’t travel on an ankle like that. I’m so sorry that happened to you.”

My body instantly relaxed, and my respect and fondness for Gai skyrocketed.

“Go right now, honey, and take care of that ankle of yours,” Gai said, then she sprung to her feet. “I think there’s some extra crutches in the closet that we keep for emergencies.” Gai left, and a few minutes later, she came back with silver crutches.

“I can’t go right now,” I protested when she began to gather my things. “There’s still twenty minutes left in the work day.”
