Gai waved her hand. “This is a medical emergency. You need to get that ankle looked at now. I’ll explain the whole situation to Alexander and the HR department. You won’t get in trouble.”

Ridiculously, my eyes began to water from Gai’s kindness. She even helped me bring my things to the parking garage as I awkwardly limped after her on my crutches. Before I even got to my car, my armpits began to become sore.

“Good luck,” Gai said once I was in my car safely. “Call me tonight to tell me about your ankle.”

“I can’t thank you enough, Gai. You’re the best.” A large lump developed in my throat.

“Us girls got to stick together, right?” she said and winked.

I drove to the nearby physical therapy center that my father frequented after he had to have knee surgery ten years ago. I used to take him to his appointments here all the time and wait with him. Immediately, when I walked in, I recognized the owner, Jacob Hunt. He was a good–looking man in his late thirties with dimples and wavy blonde hair.

His sea–green eyes sparked with recognition when he saw me.

“Is that you, Olivia?” he asked. “You’re all grown up now!”

I laughed, and he gave me an awkward hug thanks to my crutches.

“Is your old man around?” Jacob asked, referring to my father. “He was always so overprotective over you when you would sit in on his appointments. And rightfully so because you were just a teenager last time you were in here.” He paused and looked down at my swollen ankle. “Oh, no. What happened here?”

Quickly, I explained to him how I had sprained my ankle by rolling it due to my high heels. He took me to the back room to examine me. He made sure that nothing was broken and my body sagged with relief when he assured me that my injuries weren’t extensive. After he did a few more tests, he said that all I needed was for my ankle to be wrapped and to stay off it for a while.

“Thanks, Jacob,” I said.

“I’m going to have you wait in the waiting room while I prepare your paperwork. Then I can wrap up your ankle and send you home,” he said.

Right after I sat down in the waiting room, someone sat right beside me even though there were a bunch of open chairs.

My heart slammed against my chest as I turned to the stranger beside me.

While Olivia was busy at physical therapy, Alexander was pacing his office, debating with himself on whether or not he should give Olivia her space or go to her cubicle to see if she was alright.

He kept running his hand through his hair just like she had done when they’d been making out in his office.

He knew that he had made a mistake as soon as he had kissed her in his office. But he couldn’t make himself stop when he got a taste of her sweet lips. Olivia had been clear that she wanted to keep their personal lives out of the office, but he had crossed that line today.

As Alexander looked out his large office window, he knew that he had screwed up. How could he have done this? It felt like he had messed everything with Olivia up.

Right before the work day ended, he made the decision to find Olivia and apologize for crossing her boundaries today. With a surge of determination, Alexander left his office and headed for her cubicle. His brow furrowed when he saw that her desk was empty.

Immediately, Alexander went down to the secretarial department, thinking that she went back down there after their illicit kiss, but she wasn’t there, and no one had seen her since their lunch.
