Also, I’d never used crutches before, and the foreign pressure on my armpits was sending electric pulses of pain down my arms. I stopped in the middle of the busy sidewalk–earning a few dirty looks from people passing by–and leaned against an abandoned storefront. The cool glass felt good against my sweaty back. If the concrete wasn’t dirty, I would consider sitting on the ground.

Ethan leaned next to me. I was too tired to shuffle away from him. His body heat didn’t warm me up even half as much as Alexander’s. I shook my head to clear it. I needed to take a break from men.

A car horn beeped in the distance, and two kids rode bicycles past us. The world kept moving on around us, but it seemed like my ex–husband and I had traveled back to the past. This neighborhood was where we spent most of the time as a couple.

“Listen, I’m sorry about this morning at the diner,” Ethan said in a gentle voice. “I was out of line, and I didn’t mean anything I said.” He paused and let out a long, slow breath.

When I didn’t say anything, Ethan continued. “I only said those terrible things to you because I’m jealous,” he admitted. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed that his foot was tapping an erratic rhythm. “Even though I was the one who stepped out on our marriage, I just can’t stand the thought of you with another man.” He stuffed his hands in the pockets of his black slacks. “I know how much of a double standard that is-

I snorted, which made Ethan turn toward me, trying to catch my eye.

“Really, I do,” he said, his lips trembling a little with suppressed emotion. “But I just want you to know that I understand where you’re coming from, and I want you to know that I promise that I’ll never force myself on you again. I can see how wrong that is now.” His eyes widened with sincerity.

I snorted again, but Ethan ignored me this time.

“If you walk around with me around our old school, just for an hour, I promise that I will never bother you again,” Ethan said.

I scoffed at his ridiculous suggestion, more than ready to turn him down again.

“Come on, Olivia.” He urged and reached forward to grab my hand, but then thought better of it. “For old time’s sake? It could be fun. Let me make it up to you for overstepping this morning. Hanging out with me would also keep your mind off of your injured ankle.”

I wanted to tell him that the only way that hanging out with him would keep my mind off my ankle was that I would be too busy fantasizing ways of killing him.

I opened my mouth to tell him this, but I thought his offer through. Even though I didn’t trust him, if there was even a chance that spending an hour with Ethan would get him out of my life, I had to take it.
