Chapter 310
“Nice driving,” Alexander complimented Gai. “If you hadn’t reacted so quickly, we could have gotten seriously injured.”
“Honestly, boss, I was just worried about your expensive car. I could never pay to get it fixed,” Gai admitted.
Olivia let out a surprised chuckle and a reluctant smile tugged on Alexander’s lips.
“Don’t worry,” he said as he took off his seatbelt. “I have insurance.”
He got out of the car to confront the idiot who had cut them off. Once Olivia got a good look at the car, she gasped.
It was Ethan’s red BMW.
“That’s Reed!” she told Alexander before he could get out of the car. “He’s Ethan’s driver. Let me talk to him. I can try to deescalate the situation.”
Alexander had already opened his door. He was considering her offer, wondering what the right call was. After a tense moment, he reluctantly shut his door.
Reed–a burly man with a bushy red beard–walked up to the passenger window. Olivia rolled it down and fixed a smile on her face, trying to remain calm.
“Hi, Reed!” she said, her voice much higher than normal. “We just left Ethan. He’s in the bamboo forest. He sent us away, saying that he needed some time alone.”
Reed narrowed his eyes suspiciously, but Olivia was already rolling up her window.
“Drive,” she whispered to Gai, who listened.
As Reed watched the fancy Rolls–Royce drive away, his shoulders slumped in relief. He waited on a bench by the bamboo forest. Reed was sure his boss would come out soon. He believed Olivia. She had never led him astray before.
But as the hours crept by, Reed began to grow uneasy. He kept spinning around to look at the forest, but he was deathly afraid of the dark, and he wanted to stay on the sidewalk where there were streetlights. But now it was the middle of the night and his boss still hasn’t come

Finally, he saw a school security guard–identifying him because he was dressed in a black
and talking on a walkie–talkie. Reed stood and walked over to him.

“Can I help you, sir?” the guard asked and hovered his hand over his pocket. This was where he had a taser.
“Yes,” Reed said, then explained that his boss was last seen in the bamboo forest hours ago,
but he never came out.
The guard listened and frowned. Fear shot through him when Reed was finished. His boss would be pissed if a man was lost when he was on duty. “Come on,” he told Reed. “We can look for your boss on my golf cart.”
They hopped into the cart and sped through the forest. As the wind whipped through their hair, the two men’s eyes scanned the forest. But there was no sign of Ethan.
Finally, they got to the clearing and found Ethan sitting in the middle of the clearing.
When Reed spotted his boss, his eyes widened in shock. He hadn’t even recognized him at first.
The usual put–together man had his arms wrapped around his knees, and he was in a fetal position. He was rocking back and forth, muttering to himself. His face, clothes, and hair were covered in dirt. There was a freshly dug hole next to him, filling the air with the smell of dirt.
