As Reed slowly drove through the empty parking lot, he knew that Ethan’s breakdown had something to do with Olivia. His boss had ordered him to follow her all day and report her whereabouts. He had no idea why Ethan had cheated on his wife if he still so clearly loved

Once we were on the quiet main road, far away from my old college, I relaxed slightly. I asked Gai to drop me off at the physical therapist so that I could drive my own car home.

“Thank you for driving me home,” I said to Alexander as he started my car.

I was slightly shivering, still affected by the cold bite of the bamboo forest. If I were being honest with myself, I was also on edge from seeing my ex–husband having a breakdown. I didn’t think I would ever be able to get the image of Ethan frantically digging up our past out of my mind.

I knew, deep down in my heart, that Ethan was still in that empty, dark clearing manically digging and trying to find evidence that we were once in love.

Alexander put the heat on full blast, and my body relaxed as I flexed my fingers in front of the vents. I bit my lip to keep from smiling at how well he could read me. I’d been about to turn on the heater right before he had.

He waved away my thanks as he looked behind him to check the empty road. “We live in the same apartment complex. Driving your car home is the least I can do.”

We drove in silence for a while. After the crazy day that I’ve had, it was nice to just be alone with my thoughts. Eventually, my heart rate slowed down, and I wasn’t shivering anymore. Alexander was the one to break the silence.

“I’m proud of you for standing up to Ethan today,” he murmured.

We were stopped at a light, and we gazed into each other’s eyes. My heart lifted at his words, and I didn’t double guess myself as I reached for his hand and threaded my fingers through his. When the light turned green, Alexander began to drive, but he kept his hand in mine. It was one of the nicest moments that I’ve had with him.

Of course, two minutes later, he had to ruin it.
