I squeezed Alexander’s hand and then kissed the back of his palm. This made him smile, and he grinned the rest of the way there.

When we got to our destination, Alexander helped me into the nondescript building. This doctor’s office was completely different from the clinic. There was only one other woman sitting in the waiting room, and she seemed content to read her magazine. Quiet classic music drifted through the room, creating a calming atmosphere, and there was even a tiny rock fountain on top of the welcome desk.

The receptionist said that my doctor was ready for me and I could go right on my back.

When Alexander started to follow me, I put my hand on his muscular chest. “You are not coming with me!”

“But we’re dating,” he pointed out.

“Just because we’re in a relationship doesn’t mean you can join my gyno appointment. Some things just have to stay private!”

A middle–aged, elegant–looking woman was waiting for Olivia in the examination room. She had high cheekbones and shiny black hair.

Silently, Olivia thought to herself that this woman looked more like a model than a doctor. She wasn’t even wearing a white coat. But as soon as Dr. Robertson introduced herself, Olivia’s guard lowered. Dr. Robertson was very kind and knowledgeable about medicine. She explained that she moved to New York twenty years ago from China, and she used a combination of Chinese and Western medicine in order to treat patients.

Dr. Robertson examined Olivia with a gentle touch and listened as the young woman explained her fears about being pregnant. The doctor assured her that no harm would come to her if she took the morning after pill again. But she strongly warned against Olivia, taking it a third time if the situation were to arise. Once Olivia swallowed the pills and her fears were gone, Dr. Robertson called in a prescription for a birth control pill to the local pharmacy.

Olivia left the appointment with a smile on her face. As she walked with Alexander back to his car, she thanked him repeatedly for bringing her to Dr. Robertson. Alexander kissed her cheek and drove to the pharmacy to pick up Olivia’s medication.

But Olivia shouldn’t have been happy with her experience with Doctor Robertson because the doctor was about to commit a crime against Olivia. Right after the young woman who was dating Alexander Green left the examination room, Doctor Robertson’s smile vanished from her face. She went into her large office, closed the door, and locked it. Her next appointment wasn’t for another twenty minutes, and she had told her assistant that she didn’t want to be disturbed.

Dr. Robertson sat behind her glass desk and picked up her office phone. She called the number that she knew by heart, Helen Green–Alexander’s mother.

Unbeknownst to Alexander, Helen had asked Dr. Robertson to inform her if her son brought a young woman named Olivia to see her. Helen had offered her a large sum of money if the doctor broke the law to tell her another patient’s medical information. Dr. Robertson had a lot of debts, all thanks to her cheating ex–husband, and she wasn’t afraid to break HPPA guidelines in order to receive a giant payday.

“Hello, Helen,” she said when Alexander’s mom answered the phone.

“Dr. Robertson? Are you calling to confirm my appointment in six weeks…or about the other thing?” Helen asked, her voice slightly breathless. She had been just about to leave for the tennis lesson, but she would miss it if the doctor had any news for her.
