Chapter 334

*Olivia*

“Fine, you can stay, but you can’t tell my parents that we’re dating. Especially since they already know that you’re my boss,” I said sternly.

Alexander put his hands up to show that he wasn’t going to argue. “I promise to be on my best behavior.”

I gestured for him to follow me inside my apartment. My mother had made Ava one of my cocktails, and the three of them were chatting around my kitchen island.

“Thank you so much for inviting Alexander, Ava,” I said in a kind voice, but I widened my eyes at my friend when no one else was looking so that she knew I was being sarcastic.

“You’re welcome,” she replied and took a sip of her drink. “Someone had to.” Ava smirked, clearly amused by this whole situation.

“Good thing that you made enough food to feed an army,” Alexander said, eyeing my full dining room table.

I smiled, but I was sure that it came out more as a grimace.

Alexander introduced himself to my parents and shook my father’s hand. I noticed that my mother’s eyes were slowly taking in his tall, muscular body, and I wanted to die on the spot. Everyone sat down around the dining room table. I went into the kitchen to pour Alexander a glass of red wine because I knew he wouldn’t enjoy the cocktail that I had made.

I made myself another drink and poured extra gin into my glass. I would need extra alcohol to get through this night.

My hands were shaking as I carried Alexander’s red wine and my fruity mixed drink.

I was surprised to find Alexander talking with my parents out on the windy balcony. My stomach swooped as I imagined the kinds of things that Alexander could be saying to my mom and dad.

He wouldn’t tell them about us, right? I was pretty certain that I had made it clear that I wasn’t telling my parents. I didn’t think Alexander would betray my trust, but a small part of me could picture Alexander telling my parents that we were dating to pressure me into going public with our relationship. I didn’t think that he would do something awful like that to me, but I rushed

A few drops of his wine spilled on the concrete of the balcony since I was practically sprinting. Thankfully, Alexander was simply telling my parents an amusing story about work, and the three of them were laughing. My pulse slowly went down to a normal rate.

“Thank you,” he muttered when I handed him his wine.

A jolt went through me when he leaned forward a fraction of an inch-like he was going to kiss my check-but he remembered my parents were here before he did any damage. Just to be careful, I stepped away from him, my back hitting the cool metal of the railing. Distancing myself from him went against every instinct I had.

“Watch yourself, honey,” my mom said and put her arm protectively around me. Her warm, soft touch was familiar and comforting. It reminded me of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies and an afternoon thunderstorm that brought me a strange kind of calmness. “The railing might give out, and you could fall.”

I nodded and took a sip of my drink, glaring at Alexander out of the corner of my eye to warn him to behave himself. If I had to babysit him all night, I would do it. If I wasn’t ready for my friends to know about our relationship, then I definitely wasn’t ready for my parents to know. Then, they would have a million and one questions for me, and that wasn’t what this weekend was about.

“Your boss was just telling us a charming story about how you found a kitten together,” my father said and gestured to Alexander.

“Yes, I can’t believe that you found a cat in a restaurant during a lunch meeting,” my mother said and shook her head. “If I were you, I’d never eat there again. How unsanitary!” She paused, and a thoughtful look crossed her face. “I wonder how it ended up there in the first place.” She grinned. “How nice of you to take the kitten in, Alexander.”

“I couldn’t say no to that sweet little face,” he said and leaned in next to me under the context of looking at the busy city below us.
