I paused just before I poured the orange juice into my drink. The sour mixed with the sweet smell wafting from my glass made my stomach turn. “Why would I be nervous?”

Ava rolled her eyes. “Oh, come on. I know that you guys are secretly dating. You can stop pretending.”

I stayed silent, figuring that was the safest approach when dealing with my smart, perceptive friend.

“I was eavesdropping on them,” she said, trying a new tactic.

I couldn’t help but lean forward. “What are they saying?”

She smirked triumphantly. “I knew that you would be interested to know. Alexander is talking to your mom about literature,” she revealed. “And he’s totally sucking up to her. He just happened to have a few out-of-print books in his bag to give to Polin. Your mom gasped and said that she had been searching for those particular books for years.”

Despite myself, my heart warmed. This meant that Alexander had researched my parents’ interests before coming here. I had no idea how he found out that my mother enjoyed niche authors, but I couldn’t say that I was surprised. Alexander had the resources to find out anything he wanted.

Ava stood beside me and began making herself a whiskey sour. She was generous with the amount of whiskey she poured into her glass. “They are totally bonding over reading. She loves him already, I can tell.”

Reluctantly, a grin tugged on the corners of my lips.

“I left when your dad and Alexander started talking about current events and the stock market,” my friend said and rolled her eyes. “The conversation became too boring for me to follow. But they seemed to be bonding.”

“Really? My dad doesn’t…get along with most people.”

Ava shrugged. “They seemed to be getting along just fine. He even gave your dad a gift just like he did for your mother.”

My eyebrows rose. “Really? What did he give him?”

“Alexander said that he heard DeAngelo was an expert gardener, so he brought over some expensive brand of red roses,” she explained.

“Were they Austin Roses?” I questioned with awe in my voice. That was my dad’s favorite brand.

Ava pointed. “Yes, that’s the one.”

I shook my head in disbelief. I couldn’t believe that Alexander had gone to all this trouble just to impress my parents when I wasn’t even planning on introducing him as my boyfriend.

“Your dad tried to refuse the roses at first because they are so expensive, but Alexander insisted,” Ava continued.

“I can’t believe that Alexander did all of that,” I said, unable to keep my thoughts to myself.

To my surprise, Ava snorted. “I can.”

I titled my head. “Why?” I asked, genuinely curious.

“Isn’t it obvious? He’s in love with you.”

*Olivia*

My mouth dropped open, and I was speechless for nearly a minute.

Ava set down the sour mix and waved her hand in front of my face. “Hello? Earth to Olivia.”
