“Don’t be. I’ve heard that your green thumb is famous amongst the plant lover community. You will have to send me pictures when they are fully grown,” Alexander said and poured himself another glass of wine.

chat “I will,” my dad said and flushed from the compliment. “I’m excited to send my group dedicated to gardening pictures of these roses. No one in our group has managed to get their hands on Austin roses yet. They are going to be so excited to see them.”

My father looked down at the roses he was clutching carefully in his hands like they were his newborn baby.

I caught Alexander’s eye and grinned, silently thanking him for purchasing gifts for my parents. I hadn’t seen my dad this happy in so long.

My mother held the books that Alexander gave her tightly against her chest. She was grinning, and there was a twinkle of happiness in her eyes that hadn’t been there before. “We should start our books at the same time and join a little club,” my mom suggested to Alexander. “We could start with ‘The Dried Apricot’.”

Alexander smiled and swallowed a sip of wine. “That sounds wonderful, Polin.”

I shook my head in disbelief as I watched this all unfold in front of me. I still couldn’t believe how my parents were eating out of the palm of Alexander’s hand.

Ava bit her lip so she wouldn’t smile. She finished making her whiskey sour and leaned against the counter as if enjoying the show.

I knew exactly what she was thinking-that Alexander was trying his best to impress my parents because he was in love with me-but I was doing my best to ignore her.

As I sipped my drink, I rubbed my forehead in confusion. I needed to remind myself that Alexander was a businessman. One of the most important parts of his job was to get people to like him. That was exactly what he was doing right now with my parents. Alexander was used to collecting people. He was like a spider with his charm, spinning a golden web with thoughtful presents and amusing stories.

He was good at what he did. That was why he ran one of the most successful businesses in the world. A large lump developed in my throat as a sudden thought made me freeze. What if I was just another person caught up in his web? Ava thought that Alexander was infatuated with me,
