Teresa was still feeling the aftereffects of the flu, her body hot and feverish, like she’d been baking in an oven.

When Charles’s deep, magnetic voice whispered in her ear, Teresa felt a shiver of electricity run down her spine.

Halfconscious, she struggled to force her eyes open, barely clawing her way out of her dream.

I was just dreaming about Troy, so why am I hearing Charles’s voice?Teresa wondered in confusion.

When her eyes finally focused on the figure looming above, Teresa shuddered in surprise. She instinctively tried to move away, but Charles had braced his hands on either side of her, blocking any possible escape.

In the dim light filtering through the window, Teresa could just make out Charles’s expression. His brow was slightly furrowed, his eyes fixed on her with an intense, probing look.

Charles, get off me. What are you doing?Teresa said.

Her voice was low, raspybarely recognizable, even to herself.

At the same time, she reached out and tried to push Charles back, desperate to put some space between them.

Charles’s chest pressed against her palm, and even through the thin fabric of his shirt, he could feel just how burning hot her fingers

were.

His voice was laced with an icy chill as he spoke. Did you sleep with him?

Teresa winced in pain, her voice rough as she shot back, What exactly are you trying to say?

Charles suddenly leaned in, his face filling her entire world. Eyes narrowed, he asked, Is it because you think he’s better than me? Is that why you want a divorce?

She honestly had no idea what Charles meant by better-in what way, exactly?

Still, hearing him finally admit to a comparison was so rare that she couldn’t help but fire right back, her tone laced with biting sarcasm. So you’re finally ready to admit you’re the one who’s not good enough?

Charles’s expression darkened, annoyance flickering in his eyes. But then, out of nowhere, he let out a low laugh. Or maybe it’s just you who makes me lose interest.

Teresa was caught off guard by his words.

Maybe it was because they hit her right where it hurt mostit made it sting even more.

All these years, things had always been off between her and Charles in that department.

Every time, Charles just went through the motions, like he was doing his duty and nothing more.

She never felt comfortable or satisfied, not even once.

His words hit a nerve, but she knew the awkwardness between her and Charles wasn’t just on her

If this had been before, she would’ve let his words eat at her for ages.

But now, she just didn’t care anymore.

Teresa gave a small laugh, completely unfazed. Isn’t that just perfect? Neither of us needs the other

Charles suddenly felt like he barely recognized Teresa anymoreit was like she was a complete stranger. He frowned, troubled.

After a moment of silence, he finally spoke up. If you really admire guys who are better than me, craving something I can’t give you, are you sure you don’t want to try again with me?

Seeing how sure of himself he looked, Teresa couldn’t help but let out a sarcastic snort. And what would that change? We’ve been married all these yearshave you ever lasted more than five minutes?

As soon as she said it, Teresa felt his grip on her chin slacken.

In the blurry shadows, she thought she caught the cold hint of a mocking smile on Charles’s lips.

At the same time, Teresa couldn’t help but think about Naomi’s video account and her usual daily updateshow Troy had been with her last night.

Thinking about that, Teresa couldn’t resist calling out, her tone cutting. Charles, sometimes you really shouldn’t be so arrogant. Maybe you’re just nobody at all.”

With that, she rolled out from under him and sat up.

It wasn’t quite dawn yet, but it was close.

Teresa didn’t feel like sleeping anymore, so she headed to the bathroom to freshen up.

As for whatever was going through Charles’s mind outside, Teresa honestly couldn’t be botheredand didn’t plan on wasting any energy caring.

When she stepped out of the bathroom, Charles was already gone.

By the time she finished getting dressed, dawn was just breaking.

It was still early, but Teresa had no plans to linger at Joyacre Villa.

As Teresa stepped out of the guest room, the hallway echoed with the sound of crying coming from Yolanda’s room. Daddy, Miss Naomi didn’t reply to my WhatsApp. She doesn’t want me anymore,Yolanda sobbed.

Through the halfopen door, Teresa saw Charles standing by the bed while Yolanda clung tightly to his waist, crying as if her heart was breaking,

Charles bent down, quickly comforting her. It’s still early. Maybe Miss Naomi is still sleeping.”

Yolanda looked up at him, eyes full of tears. But Daddy, Miss Naomi always wakes me up at this time. But not today, she didn’t.

Charles gently patted Yolanda’s head, his voice warm. Would you like me to call Miss Naomi for you?

Yolanda nodded eagerly. Yes, please.

So, Charles held Yolanda close and called Naomi,

But when he dialed, all he got was a message saying the phone was switched off.

Teresa, still standing in the doorway, heard that cold, mechanical voice from the automated system.

Thinking about Naomi’s regular video posts, Teresa found herself wonderingmaybe last night Naomi really did have a beautiful evening.

Shaking her head with a small smile, Teresa headed downstairs.

Yolanda, still clinging to Charles’s waist, stared at the doorway, catching sight of Teresa’s shadow slipping past.

Did she hearme crying? Yolanda wondered, her heart aching.

Butif she did, why didn’t she come see me? She always used to care, Yolanda thought, feeling even more lost.

She really did care so much before. Why is everything so different now? Yolanda thought sadly.

But it wasn’t like this was the first time something like this had happened.

Deep down, Yolanda knewher mom just didn’t love her anymore.

With Naomi’s phone still switched off, Yolanda stopped crying. She looked up at Charles and said, Daddy, Miss Naomi must be tired. She’s probably still sleeping, right?

Charles gently cupped Yolanda’s cheek and said, Yeah, you’re right.”

Even though he said that, Charles knew Naomishe never really switched her phone off.

She was a PhD student, always on standby so she could pick up whenever her advisor or the college tried to reach her.
