Chapter 2
Early that morning, Kate packed all her belongings and threw them downstairs.
The engagement ring he’d given her she smashed it to pieces with a hammer, her face completely expressionless.
The preserved flower teddy bear from their wedding anniversary she cut it into strips with scissors.
The matching pajamas he’d bought for her birthday she burned them.
Everything else went straight into the dumpster downstairs.
After finishing all that, she went to three job interviews she’d scheduled, hoping to find work.
By the time she got home, it was already evening.
She opened the door to find Derek and Ashley painting together.
Their heads were practically touching, looking incredibly intimate. She stopped in her tracks.
She was about to pretend she hadn’t seen anything and back out, but Ashley had already spotted her with sharp eyes. “Kate!”
Derek put down his brush and glanced back at Kate with a flat expression, his tone completely neutral as he made brief introductions.
“Ashley, this is my wife Kate. Kate, this is…”
“I know. Ashley.”
Kate’s voice was soft and polite as she stepped forward to shake Ashley’s hand.
When she tried to pull back, Ashley gripped her hand tightly. Kate frowned – it hurt.
Ashley acted like nothing was happening, squeezing harder while putting on an enthusiastic expression. “Derek’s mentioned you so many times! Seeing you in person, Kate, you’re even prettier than in the photos!”
Kate stared at their joined hands.
Ashley gave an awkward laugh and finally let go.
Kate’s hand was already red from the pressure. She thought back to what Ashley had just said and frowned. “He showed you photos
of me?”
Ashley smiled and glanced at Derek, her tone casual. “Of course! Even though I’ve been overseas all these years, Derek and I have stayed in constant touch. We tell each other everything!”
Tell each other everything.
Including their relationship status and her private photos?
Kate smiled bitterly, trying to force her mouth into a smile but failing. She suddenly felt exhausted and didn’t want to continue this conversation. “I’m going upstairs. You two take your time.”
She pushed open the guest bedroom door.

Chapter 2
The sight before her was almost painful to witness,
The room was filled with women’s clothes, makeup, even underwear, while her luggage from this morning had completny disappeared.
She turned around to see the other two had followed her upstairs,
Ashley smiled meaningfully.
“Kate, my mom and Derek’s grandmother go way back, so when I moved back to the States, she asked Derek to let me crash here for a while. Hope that’s not too much of a hassle.”
“No trouble at all.”
Kate said quietly, “So where did my stuff go?”
“Sorry Kate, I had no idea you and Derek were sleeping separately, so when I was moving my things in and saw those women’s clothes, I didn’t know whose they were, so I… threw them out.”
Ashley was trying to hide it, but Kate still caught the flash of smugness in her eyes.
She clenched her fists, anger rushing to her head. “What gives you the right to throw away my things without asking?”
“I told her to throw them out. Problem?” Derek spoke up flatly, looking at Kate with complete indifference.
Wasn’t she supposed to be so independent? Always going on about divorce and separate bedrooms – guess even ice queens like her
could have meltdowns.
Kate stared hard at Derek.
“That silk pajama set was hand–sewn by my grandmother. It’s the last thing I have of her! You threw that away too?!”
Derek pressed his lips together, his tone emotionless. “Gone.”
Kate covered her mouth, choking back tears, then turned and ran out.
Derek called after her, “It’s been in the trash for hours. Even if you go downstairs to look now, you probably won’t find it.”
Kate stopped for a moment, roughly wiping away her tears, then ran out even faster.
That single tear made Derek’s chest tighten.
He instinctively started to follow her out.
Behind him, Ashley cried “Ah!” and fell to the floor. “Derek, Kate was running so fast she knocked me over and I twisted my ankle…”
Her eyes were red, tears threatening to fall as she looked at Derek pitifully.
Derek stopped mid–step and came back, gently lifting her up. “Let’s get some medicine on that.”
Ashley wrapped her arms around Derek’s neck, a flash of triumph in her eyes.
The sky had turned deep blue. At the east side garbage station.
Kate searched everywhere but found nothing.
