Chapter 7
His eyes burn with terrifying intensity, breathing ragged. “Don’t make me…”
Right then, my fingers finally find the panic button.
I directly slam it down!
BEEP! BEEP!
Car piercing alarms shriek through the house.
Every light in the villa blazes on.
Damon whips around toward the window as guards come running.
He turns back to me, his expression a mess of rage, desperation, and something that looks like defeat.
Nova, you’re really this heartless?”
His voice suddenly drops, like all the fight’s gone out of him.
Ten years… ten fucking years together, and you can just cut me loose? Send me to rot in prison?”
You cut us loose first. Damon.”
stare at him, my voice flat and emotionless. “The day you cheated. The day you called me the maid. It was over then.”
Fine. Fine, it’s over…”
He starts laughing-wild, broken laughter-then pulls out a knife from his jacket.
My heart stops. I shrink back instinctively.
Damon, what the hell are you doing?”
What am I doing?”
He toys with the blade, eyes unfocused as they sweep the room before landing on my face.
They can’t catch me. You won’t come with me… guess there’s nothing left worth living for.”
You’re insane!”
shout at him. “Put the knife down! You still have options…”
Options?”
He lets out a bitter laugh, suddenly pressing the blade to his own throat, staring at me like he wants to burn my face into his memory forever.
You destroyed all my options, Nova! If I’m gonna die, I’m making damn sure you never forget me!”
Don’t!”
scream without thinking, lunging forward to stop him, but it’s too late.
Damon’s body jerks backward, hits the wall, and slides down slowly.
Blood pours from his throat, staining the dark carpet.
Those eyes-always so obsessive and vicious-go dark forever.
The door explodes open at the same time. Leo storms in with the guards.
Everyone freezes at the scene.
Leo’s face goes white.
He pulls me into his arms, covering my eyes. “Don’t look, Nova. Don’t look…”
I lean against him, shaking, tears finally breaking free.
Not for Damon’s death, but for those wasted ten years.
For the naive girl who thought she’d grow old with him.
‘Clean this up.”
