You Are Mine, Little Sister novel Chapter 37

Chapter 37

A lump formed in my throat, my face reddening from embarrassment. NNot at all, sir. He’s merely an acquaintance.

That suddenly sounded stupid considering I’d almost come from masturbating and dreaming of him. How fucked up.

His brows furrowed as if in contemplation. I checked and discovered he was representing Mr. Harrison. They really ought to vet people better before giving out invites. There was a brief pause. Thank God you aren’t dating him. You should steer clear, Ze.

I looked down at my laps. Oh, if only he knew how clear I wanted to steer.

What are your plans for the weekend? He asked a while later.

I fumbled for words in my head. UmDon’t really have any yet.

Why don’t we have that lunch I talked about? Or better yet, we could make it dinner.

Shit. I should’ve known this was where he was headed.

I uh

He raised a brow, waiting.

That sounds lovely, sir. But I don’t really think I can make it.

The asshole would kill him. Memories of what happened to Adam twisted my gut with guilt that still hadn’t dulled.

Oh.He appeared disappointed. Why?

I justremembered. I have to help my sister out with something this weekend.

God. That sounded like a high school excuse. I was a terrible liar.

I see,he said quietly, then turned to look out the window.

My phone beeped beside me a while later. Goosebumps prickled across my skin before I checked it out.

UNKNOWN: Looks like you slept really well, Green. Did you dream about me?

I nearly squirmed in my seat.

But hold on. Why did that sound like he’d seen metouching myself?

I shook the thought off. That wasn’t possible.

My hand instinctively reached for my chest, touching the pendant on my neck. His necklace.

I hated that I had to wear it, but the guy was a psychopath and the last thing I wanted was getting on his nerves unnecessarily.

Another beep.

UNKNOWN: Eight more days, Green.

How’re you doing, dear?Vlyrissa asked as she led me into the enormous living room, her hand resting on the small of my back.

I’m doing just fine, ma’am. How are preparations for the inauguration party coming up?

Ahh, things are moving along nicely. You know, when you have loyal people around you, it makes things a lot easier.

We stopped in front of a couch. Please, have a seat. I’ll be with you shortly.

I nodded and watched her leave, my gaze lingering on her silk skirt and shirt.

Ms. Thorne was one lovely woman.

The couch and my butts hissed at each other as I moved to the wall, drawn by some of the frames lined up on it. There were pictures of Vlyrissa with some reputable men. In others, she was with some less privileged whom she helped.

Vlyrissa was a great philanthropist, and the frames spoke a lot of her personality. I’ve always liked and admired this woman from afar.

I reached a particular frame where she stood alone by a beach, wearing a white beach dress.

Unlike the others, this one had no children, no handshakes, no partners. Just her.

To me, it whispered, Solitude amidst the service

I smiled. She looked so beautiful.

Took that in Italy, two years ago.Her voice called out.

I turned to see her climbing down the stairs, carrying a tray containing two mugs. had just finished from a political summit. My flight was the next morning. I needed time to justbe, she smiled wistfully. So I slipped away to the coast. Took a few photos to remember how peace felt.

She stopped in front of me and extended one of the cups.

Made you some tea.”

I tried to mask my surprise. She made it herself?

Thanks.I accepted the cup with a grateful smile, then stared into the greenish content.

It’s lemon verbena. Will help you relax, she clarified, blew some air into her tea before taking a sip.

I mirrored her and took a sip, and well, it tasted better than I thought.

I turned back to the frames. These are really beautiful.

I know. Thanks, darling. And your eyes

I redirected my gaze to her.

-you have really pretty eyes.

A blush made its way to my face.

She smiled and turned away. Let’s get to work now, shall we?

We sat next to each other on the couch and I swung into action, retrieving my laptop.

Thirty minutes into the conversation, we had already made good progress. Vlyrissa was a very easy client to work with.

I figured the Governorelect wasn’t home since I hadn’t seen him yet.

Vlyrissa and I were laughing to something I said when her phone rang. My gaze flicked to the screen, purely out of reflex, and the caller ID read: Estate Guard.

I hope you don’t mind, dear. I need to take this. She lifted one finger before placing the phone over her ear.

The estate was locked down tighter than a federal vault. Grayson and I had to pass through a labyrinth of scanning procedures, security checks, and metal detectors before we were finally granted access.

Well, it made sense. These were the most important people in the state now, and after the inauguration, they’d be sipping tea in the actual White House.

Yes?What do you mean? Are you sure it’s them?Vlyrissa frowned into the phone.

For the first time, I saw her frown and it didn’t look good at all.

She went silent for a beat, then muttered, Let them in.

She dropped the call.

Them? She had visitors? Why did it seem like she wasn’t happy to see them?

She stood abruptly and walked offthis time not bothering to offer the warm, polite excuse she had every other time. She just left.

Wow. Vlyrissa Thorne was pissed.

I watched as she climbed the stairs with angry steps.

He didn’t tell me they’d be coming!I overheard her snapping, possibly into the phone, though her voice faded quickly

after that.

A maid walked up to me. Ma’am, would you like anything?

I glanced at my now empty mug. Thank you. I’m good.”

She nodded with a polite smile and left.

Three minutes later, I spotted a vehicle driving in through the window. Vlyrissa returned at the same time.

I’m sorry, Zerali, but we’ll have to cut our meeting short. I’ll let Mr. Knightley know when I’m ready to resume. The warmth was gone from her voice, her gaze pinned to the window without glancing at me.

Who were they? Vlyrissa was so angry.

Of course, ma’am. Thank you for your time.I fixed my laptop into its bag and stood up.
