Marian brought over the glasses of milk, her eyes crinkling with a smile as she straightened things up around them.
Nina muttered just loud enough for Marian to hear, “Now this is what a good marriage should look like.”
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Back at the apartment, Nina was standing in front of her closet, trying to figure out what to wear tomorrow.
She and Theo were basically living together now. They’d had a fight not too long ago, so she’d gone home for a while, but honestly, this place was just as well stocked as her parents’ house. Nothing was missing.
“When did you get here?”
Theo’s voice came from the doorway, and it was all Nina could do not to laugh.
He asked when she arrived, not when she came back. It was obvious he still thought of this as his apartment, not theirs. Even though they’d been sharing a bed here for almost four months.
“Not long ago,” Nina replied, her tone deliberately neutral.
“I heard your family canceled the deal with the Martin Group. Why?”
“Business stuff isn’t really my thing. If you want details, ask my dad or my brother.”
She wasn’t about to let him think she cared about him worrying over Ruby.
Nina picked her outfit, shut the closet, and started for the door.
Theo caught her by the arm as she tried to pass.
“Nina, what’s with you lately?”
“You care so much about what’s going on with Ruby’s family, but I’ve never seen you worry about my brother. If Ruby’s that important, why are you still sleeping with me?”
Nina yanked her arm free, the anger in her eyes impossible to hide.
She was done. Three years together, and Theo’s heart still felt like it was made of stone.
Patricia had been right all along. Someone like Theo would never show his true colors until he was pushed to the edge.
“Wasn’t your brother’s issue already taken care of?” Theo shot back. The other guy tried to frame him, got caught with the money transfers, and the whole thing fell apart on its own. What’s left to worry about?
