Snap!
The call cut off so fast it almost echoed.
Ruby stared at her phone, chest tight with anger. She didn’t even have to wonder what they were doing—she knew exactly what was going on. Her hands shook as she tried to calm down, but the rage just kept building until she finally lost it. Without thinking, she hurled her phone at the wall. It hit with a satisfying crack.
Her body was already wrecked from all the physical therapy, and now Nina had to stomp all over her heart too.
“Ahhhhh!”
Her scream was so raw that the doctor and nurses nearby froze, not daring to get any closer.
“That bitch!” Ruby spat, voice shaking. “Nina, you homewrecker. Shameless little side chick.”
The door swung open. “What’s going on?” Tina rushed in, eyes wide.
Ruby pulled herself up, fighting through the pain, and clung to Tina, sobbing so hard her whole body shook. “Mom…”
Her cries filled the room, spilling out into the hallway, heartbreak and fury in every sound.
Outside, the summer sky rumbled with thunder. The rain hadn’t even started, but lightning flashed, and a wild gust of wind whipped the sheer curtains around the room.
In that flickering light, Nina was pinned to the couch, someone’s hand tangled in her hair. A necktie stuffed in her mouth kept her from screaming for help.
It went on and on—nearly two hours of chaos—until finally the rain came down in sheets, slamming the curtains against the window, soaking everything. Only then did Nina collapse onto the sofa, completely spent.
Theo grabbed her arm and hauled her up, carrying her to the bedroom.
“Don’t fall asleep,” he warned.
“You said you liked it, right? So let’s keep going.”
“Theo, you’re a psycho. You’re insane,” Nina muttered, her voice barely above a whisper. She didn’t even have the strength to lift her head.
“You want it, but you don’t have the guts. If you’re so bold, why not go after Ruby instead?”
She barely got the words out before Theo’s hand closed around her throat.
“Nina, isn’t this a little hypocritical? You knew I was married when you chased me. You knew about Ruby, and you didn’t care. Now, after three years, suddenly you want to change everything?”
