Something in Patricia’s heart melted, just a little. “Sorry. I’ve spent so many years on my own, it’s just how I am.”

“I know. Really, I do.” Oliver’s hands landed gently on her shoulders as he eased her back a step. He bent down, eyes locking on hers with a soft, lopsided smile. “But you let me help you today. That means everything to me.”

Patricia could never get used to how intensely he looked at her.

Like staring into an endless abyss.

Like he wanted to pull her right into the deep end of love.

She wanted to turn away, to escape the way he glowed when he looked at her.

But Oliver seemed to catch on before she could move. He leaned in, pressing his forehead to hers, his touch so warm and gentle it made hiding impossible.

His words landed softly on her nose, warm and ticklish, sending sparks all the way up to her brain.

Patricia looked up at him, about to say something.

Oliver leaned in closer, his voice low and steady. “Pattie, you’re my responsibility.”
