“Words are just words. Just because I say something doesn’t mean it’ll magically come true. You want to get married, and I’m willing to marry you. Isn’t that a win-win for both of us?”
Theo stared at her, confused. Just a few days ago, Nina had been the one pushing for marriage, and now she seemed like a completely different person.
“I do want to get married,” Nina said as she took a slow, steady step toward him, “but I don’t want to be used.”
“When have I ever used you?”
She looked at him, and Patricia’s warning echoed in her mind: “You’ll become the next me.” Wasn’t that what she was turning into? Hadn’t he used her, even if he never admitted it? Who had been by his side all these years? She stayed out of his world, but in private, he still expected her to please him. And he called that not using her?
Nina took a deep breath, her eyes cold and clear as she looked at Theo. She didn’t want to drag this out. She just wanted him to leave. “I’ll think about it.”
“Think about it?” Theo’s brows knitted together. This wasn’t how he pictured any of this going. He didn’t know how long the Newton family could keep their scandal under wraps. He needed an answer, and soon. He was running out of time.
“If you have any demands, just say it,” he said.
“Any demands?” Nina asked, raising her eyebrows.
“Of course,” Theo replied with a nod.
“Alright, then. How about you kneel every three steps and crawl to my family’s front door to propose? Would you do that?”
Theo’s face went pale. He was looking right at Nina, but for a second, he thought he saw Patricia standing there instead. That strong, no-argument tone—it was exactly like Patricia’s.
He couldn’t help himself. “Have you seen Patricia lately?”
