The offer was almost too good to be true.

Howard was laying his sincerity out on the table.
At least, it sure looked that way right now.
The room felt frozen, everyone holding their breath and waiting for someone else to make a move.
Nina’s phone buzzed. She glanced down at her screen. The message read: “Here’s a word of advice—ask for more.”
She didn’t need to see the sender’s name to know exactly who it was.
Nina turned off her phone, set it aside, and looked up. “It’s not enough.”
She spoke with a calm confidence. “If the Newton family really needs our help, they should make it worth our while. Twenty percent of some random company? That’s pocket change to the Newtons. I want twenty percent of Newton Enterprises.”
Howard’s expression hardened.
So this was what it meant to ask for the impossible. He was used to tough negotiations, but this was on another level.
Twenty percent of Newton Enterprises?
He and Theo together only held sixty percent between them.
She wanted a third of that?
She might as well have just asked for half the company.
Across the room, Theo looked like he’d just been smacked in the face. He stared at Nina, completely floored.
Howard, ever the professional, kept his cool. Most people would have blown up by now, but he just said, “Nina, you know that’s not possible.”
Nina nodded, unfazed. “I get it.”
She raised her voice. “Mrs. Zhang, please show our guests out.”
Just like that, the negotiation was over before it even began.
Once everyone was gone, Nina let herself sink into the sofa, taking a shaky breath.
It was true—if someone really wants something, no obstacle is too big.
Unless, of course, they never really wanted it to begin with.
She sat there for a moment, letting the quiet settle around her. With Zoey and Ben still outside, she took the chance to fill her glass with steaming water from the kettle.
