By late afternoon on the 29th, the whole house was buzzing with activity. Patricia tried to keep her phone on her, but as things got hectic, it always ended up abandoned somewhere she couldn’t remember.
It wasn’t until after dinner, when everyone was sprawled out on the couch chatting, that she finally found her phone and stepped outside with it. Right then, Jackson called.
“Miss, just like you said, the two of them are at it,” he reported.
Across town in Riverdale, Jackson was camped out on the curb across from a hotel. He was bundled up in a black puffer, a knit hat pulled low, glasses on, and a lollipop stuck in his mouth, watching the showdown happening at the hotel entrance.
“Where are they?” Patricia asked.
“At the hotel! The second they walked out after dinner, it started.”
Standing in the garden, warm air brushing her hair, Patricia couldn’t help but laugh. Nina was never the smartest, but Joseph wasn’t any better. Those two siblings really were a pair. If even one of them had half a brain, at least one would’ve crashed and burned by now.
Inside the hotel, Nina stared at Joseph, completely stunned. She couldn’t believe the big brother who used to dote on her had disappeared like this.
Back in school, everyone always joked that Joseph was obsessed with his little sister. But now? The moment Zoey said something nice about her at dinner, Joseph couldn’t wait to dig up old wounds and put them on display for everyone.
He’d said, “Nina was always the good kid, but she really lost her head over Theo.”
If only he’d stopped there. Instead, he kept throwing jabs at her, all disguised as jokes, each one sharper than the last.
“Who hasn’t fallen for the wrong guy when they’re young? You’ve got to have your heart broken a little if you want smooth sailing later. Nina’s luck is just getting started!”
