“Is the Newton family seriously cursed or what? This is insane.”
“If she dies in custody, I’ll be stuck writing reports till next year.”
“Mr. Lantz, can you say something here?”
The detention officers clustered outside the ER, watching through the glass as the doctors fought to save Mrs. Newton. None of them were really thinking about her life—they were worried about their own jobs.
People who only see this stuff on TV think it’s over quick, no big deal. But anyone who actually works here knows if something bad happens on your shift, you can kiss any promotion goodbye for the next three years. There’ll be nonstop paperwork, investigations, maybe even a suspension if it’s bad enough.
No one wanted to get dragged into a mess like this.
“She was fine all these days…”
“What’s that supposed to mean? Are you saying she got food poisoning here? Everyone eats from the same kitchen and they’re all fine!”
Brandon’s coworker quickly stepped in, trying to keep things from blowing up. “Come on, nobody means anything by it. Let’s not lose our heads—it’s just work.”
He pulled Brandon aside, dropping his voice. “The whole Newton case is on his desk. If anything goes wrong, everything could get overturned and start from scratch. You have no idea how tough the Newtons’ lawyer is. Just try to see it from his side, okay?”
Everyone in the station said Brandon had the worst luck—stuck with a case like this.
The other officer calmed down, shooting a helpless look at Brandon, who was standing in the doorway looking tense.
Earlier that night, Theo and Howard had still been sure Mrs. Newton would be fine.
But in the middle of the night, the detention center called—she’d been rushed to the hospital.
Father and son arrived just as the doctor came out of the ER, mask still on. “Preliminary diagnosis: stroke from high blood pressure. There’s a blockage in the brain.”
“She’ll probably have paralysis on one side from now on. And considering her age, recovery’s going to be tough. She might…”
