You Looked Down on Me Once, Now You Look Up. novel Chapter 382

“We may walk different paths, but the law ties us all together. Mr. Newton, you’re an educated man—you know what that means.”

The standoff outside the ER wasn’t going to end quickly, but it wasn’t going to blow up again either. With grandma’s high blood pressure and nothing suspicious turning up at the station, there was nothing left to do but chalk it up to bad luck and wait for her to wake up.

Brandon and his coworker headed back to the office. On the way, the guy driving grumbled, hands tight on the wheel, “What’s up with the Newton family? It’s like they’re cursed—one mess after another.”

Brandon shot him a look. “Maybe you should go warn them, then? So what, if they do something terrible, it’s their ancestors’ fault?”

If you’re doing great, you thank your ancestors. If life’s a disaster, you blame them. Even in death, those ancestors can’t catch a break. Being a Newton ancestor must be rough.

Sensing Brandon’s irritation, his coworker rubbed his nose awkwardly. “Hey, that’s not what I meant.”

“But seriously, Howard’s a real piece of work. Acting like it’s your fault his mom’s in trouble. Gross. Remember three years ago? His whole family was scheming against that girl. She must have felt so hopeless.”

Thinking about Patricia sent Brandon’s mind back to the antique bowl at his place, that old thing from the late Ming or early Qing—worth a small fortune. Just now outside the hospital room, it finally hit him: he’d been caught in Patricia’s trap for a long time. He was just another piece in her game.

Her honesty, her complaints, her helplessness, even the way she acted distant but still seemed to care—none of it was real. It was all just to get him on her side.

Last winter, she’d mentioned the holidays coming up, hinting that she hoped everything could wait until after New Year’s. Everyone knew how slow things moved—courts might technically reopen after the eighth, but good luck getting everyone together before the fifteenth. Grandma’s case was old, and even running the tests would take time.

Yesterday, he’d pushed the lab to hurry. They promised results after the Lantern Festival. And then, right on that night, grandma collapsed. Now that she was out, her life would never be the same.
