“I found something. The last time she was seen was at Cloud Peak.”
“Cloud Peak?” One of the team looked surprised. “Isn’t that place closed to outsiders?”
“Yeah, it is. But that’s where Wilma was last tracked.”
“Didn’t they used to let people in before?”
“Only once, and someone almost died that time. After that, they shut it down for good.”
Everyone started tossing out their own theories.
Brandon just kept his head down, not saying a word.
After a pause, he finally spoke. “You’re coming with me tomorrow. We’re going to check it out.”
Spring in Riverdale was always rainy. The kind of rain that just kept going, turning everything damp and heavy. The air smelled wet, and even your clothes felt sticky.
Brandon’s rookie partner sat in the passenger seat, peering through the windshield at the mansion ahead. “Seriously, a place this huge? I’d be scared it was haunted.”
“And it’s up in the hills. If someone wanted to do something bad, they could just disappear into the woods. Nobody would ever find them.”
They’d seen enough on the job to know it wasn’t impossible.
Brandon had one hand on the wheel, the other propping up his head as he waited for the gate to open. “You haven’t heard? The country’s top security company is run by Oliver. Whatever you’re worried about, they’ve probably already planned for it.”
The rookie whistled. “So many rich people in the world. Why can’t I be one of them?”
After a while, a bodyguard finally came out and waved them over. “Please follow our car up to the house.”
They wound up the mountain road, and the higher they went, the more stunned Brandon felt.
No wonder they say you only ever see a corner of a place like this.
In Cloud Peak’s courtyard, Johns stood waiting under the eaves, holding an umbrella.
“Mr. Lantz. Good to see you.”
Brandon shook his hand. “Nice to meet you.”
Johns said, “Feel free to ask me anything.”
“Are you the owner here?”
