Jackson caught Patricia’s lead and played along. “Theo, Ruby, Nina, Joseph… Joe, Tim?”
Joseph’s heart thudded in his chest.
Every single name was right.
Out of those six, only Joe and Tim hadn’t trashed him. The other four? They’d all had plenty to say.
The elevator chimed behind them. Doors slid open and a wave of people poured out. Patricia leaned against the bar, the faint scent of antiseptic drifting up as the noise swelled.
She smirked, barely moving her lips as she spoke over the clamor. “Don’t you wonder how I remember all your names so clearly?”
Joseph’s eyes narrowed. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
His breath hitched, shaky like he was about to lose it.
“Ruby told me. Over and over. She made sure I wouldn’t forget.”
“Patricia, you’re lying.”
Patricia pressed a finger to her lips, telling him to hush. Then she pulled out her phone, found a recording, and held it close to his ear.
Through the chaos, a familiar voice came through. “I want Joseph gone. If she hadn’t screwed me over at Cloud Peak, none of this would’ve happened…”
Patricia snapped her phone away and stopped the recording.
Joseph lunged, trying to grab her phone to hear the rest.
Jackson stepped between them, all muscle and menace. “Try that again and I’ll mess you up so bad your own parents won’t know you.”
“Getting bored of the psych ward? Want to try the ER instead?”
Patricia’s words hit their mark. For someone still in therapy, this was the kind of push that could send him over the edge.
“Patricia, don’t think I can’t see through you.”
Jackson just rolled his eyes, shoving Joseph back. “You’re unbelievable. Always asking questions, never trusting the answers. Believe what you want.”
