You Looked Down on Me Once, Now You Look Up. novel Chapter 504

The guy slammed his car door and stormed over, jabbing a finger right in Emerson’s face.

“Are you crazy? Slamming on the brakes in the middle of the street? You think you own the road or something?”

“You hit the brakes on a crosswalk—do you even know the rules of the road?”

Emerson got out and gave the other car a quick look. It was an Audi, and the headlight was busted.

Not exactly a cheap fix for most people.

“Sorry, something happened. Will ten grand cover it?”

The guy blinked at him. “What did you just say?”

Emerson repeated himself, calm as ever. “I said, is ten grand enough?”

The man squinted suspiciously. “You trying to rip me off? Are you drunk or what?”

“No. Call the cops if you want.”

So the guy did. A traffic cop showed up within minutes. Emerson handled it fast, offering a settlement right in front of the cop. The guy took the money and left.

The whole thing was over in less than fifteen minutes.

As soon as the car doors closed again, Tina’s voice floated over, cool and steady. “Repair shop or back to the office?”

“Office. I’ll have the driver take it to the shop later.”

Emerson started the car, but his hands were slick with sweat.

The whole drive back, he was on edge, nerves shot. Part of him hoped Tina would lose it and start yelling, maybe even cause a scene—at least then he’d know how to react. But she didn’t. She stayed calm, almost too calm, as if it wasn’t even her husband who’d messed up.

She knew. He could feel it. But when they pulled up to the company, she didn’t ask a single thing.

She just got out of the car and walked off.

It wasn’t until they were alone in the elevator that Emerson finally caved. “Don’t you have anything you want to ask me?”
