What was Oliver feeling?
Hard to say.
He wasn’t the kind of guy who showed his emotions. But today, his mood was complicated, caught somewhere between irritation and confusion.
It all started when a girl came stumbling right toward him. Out of reflex—or maybe just because he had nowhere else to go—he reached out and caught her. Maybe he was being nice, or maybe he just thought, if his own wife ever ended up in a mess like this, he’d want someone to help her out too.
But whatever sympathy he had vanished the second Ruby looked back at him. Just like that, the whole moment soured.
He helped her up quickly, then let go just as fast.
Ruby hit the floor with a loud thud.
Hector let out a sigh, then fell silent and faded into the background.
That left Ruby sitting on the floor, stunned, looking up at the man towering over her.
There was no hiding the look in his eyes—pure disgust. He stared at her like she was nothing.
Ruby was the CEO, and this was a dinner with the Skyline Entertainment film crew. Of course, her people rushed to her defense the second she fell.
“Who does that?” someone called out. “First you help her, then you shove her away?”
“Seriously, has this guy never heard of being a gentleman?”
The hall was packed with their people, and the noise was building.
Someone helped Ruby up. She dusted herself off, looking confused as she glanced at Oliver. “Did I do something to offend you, sir?”
She wasn’t blind—he was definitely good-looking—but right now, she wasn’t in the mood to care.
Oliver didn’t answer. He just fixed her with a cold stare, the kind that could freeze you in your tracks.
“Are you really going to block the doorway?” he asked.
“That’s not—” someone tried to protest, but then rushed over, waving their phone at Ruby. “Look at this.”
Ruby glanced at the screen, catching a glimpse of a Wikipedia page.
