You Looked Down on Me Once, Now You Look Up. novel Chapter 533

When Lincoln came to see Mr. Higgins out, he waited by the door while Mr. Higgins slowly pushed himself up from the table.

He took a shaky step, then another, his legs barely holding him up.

Lincoln reached out to steady him. “Careful, sir.”

Mr. Higgins brushed his hand away with a polite thanks and shuffled toward the elevator, moving slow and stiff.

It wasn’t until the elevator doors slid shut that he finally let out a shaky breath.

He leaned against the wall, even his fingertips trembling.

It felt like dying by a thousand tiny cuts—painful, but invisible.

Every word Oliver had said, every harmless-sounding line about work, had landed hard. Even the pauses between sentences seemed like they were hammering him.

But all the twists and turns between business and politics—those were things people never said out loud.

Oliver hadn’t issued a single warning.

But the more Mr. Higgins thought about it, the scarier it felt.

“Lincoln, can I ask—when did Mr. Padilla and Ms. Martin get married?”

Lincoln dodged smoothly. “Sorry, sir, I’m not too sure about the boss’s private life. Mr. Padilla doesn’t like people talking about it.”

Mr. Higgins didn’t start to feel normal again until he was in the back seat of the car, sipping water and catching his breath.

“Tell the police we’re dropping Emerson’s case,” he finally said, his voice rough.

The driver looked back at him. “Mr. Martin just tried calling you. When he couldn’t get through, he called me instead. Said to thank you and wanted to invite you for dinner.”

“That’s not necessary. And from now on, block Emerson’s calls.”

The driver guessed it had something to do with Pacific Capital, but kept quiet and just nodded.

“Didn’t I tell you to go hang out with Sara?” Oliver asked, coming in.

“I didn’t want to interrupt her at work,” Patricia said, sitting up from the couch as he walked in.

Oliver headed to the bathroom to wash his hands, then came over and slid his arms around her waist.

“What’s with the pout? Did something happen?”

“Mr. Padilla, your way of handling things is seriously impressive. Teach me your ways.”
