“Do you think that jacket will fit our son?”
“I know you’ve been swamped lately, but can you please try to see us sometime?”
Emerson froze, his throat tight. He’d almost forgotten—about Amber, about the baby growing inside her.
Life really had a way of messing with you. One minute you’re riding high, the next it all falls apart.
That evening, when the sky turned dark, Emerson left work and drove straight to Amber’s apartment.
The second he walked through the door, he pulled her into a tight hug.
“You said you wanted to study abroad, right? I’ll give you the money. You can go if you want.”
“What? I’m about to have the baby and you want me to leave now?”
“You’ll stay in Riverdale for the birth. I already booked the maternity center you liked. Stay there until the baby’s a hundred days old, then you can decide what you want to do.”
Amber looked up at him, worry written all over her face. “Did something happen, Emerson?”
She grabbed his arm, her voice shaky with fear. “Is what they’re saying on the news true? That finance guy—was it really you?”
She was in a simple white cotton dress, her belly round and prominent. Her hands shook as she clung to him. “Say something! Please, Emerson, I need to know. You show up and suddenly want me out of the country—what am I supposed to think?” Her tear-filled eyes stared up at him.
Tears streamed down her pale cheeks, her voice trembling.
Emerson took her cold fingers in his, holding them tight. “Don’t overthink it. Just do what I ask, okay?”
“Tonight, a foreign account will send you fifty million. Use it to take care of yourself and the baby. I won’t leave you alone.”
“Please, just trust me.”
Amber’s voice cracked, her lashes wet and trembling like butterfly wings.
Her grip on his hand was shaky. “So—so it’s true, isn’t it?”
