Amber heard footsteps behind her and glanced over her shoulder at the figure standing in the doorway. Patricia was there, dressed in a sleeveless linen top embroidered with delicate flowers, tucked neatly into crisp white shorts that fell below her knees. Nude heels gave her a look that was both put-together and soft.

But behind that gentle look was a cold edge in Patricia’s eyes.

Amber met her gaze, let out a quiet sigh, and absentmindedly stroked her own belly. “I did what I could.”

She’d tried to get Emerson to admit to the murder, but he was too sharp, every answer guarded and careful. Every question she asked had its own hidden meaning. What really caught her off guard was that Emerson left a blood sample behind. Not that it changed anything. He truly cared about this unborn child, but for a baby who hadn’t even been born, what difference did it make?

Patricia stepped into the room, holding a check between her fingers. “This is what you’ve earned.”

“There are two more things I need you to do.”

Amber took the check. “You told me I could leave when we got to this point.”

“Give what Emerson just said to Tina. Find Tina, let her hit you, then go see Grandma Martin.”

Amber stared, confused and a little shocked.

Patricia smiled, and it was impossible not to notice how beautiful she looked when she did. “I know you have the recording.”

“You want her to hit me?”

Patricia didn’t even hesitate. “Five hundred thousand for one slap.”

It was only after meeting Patricia that Amber realized how powerful money really was. She was trading something that meant nothing to her for something Patricia valued most, and there was no way for her to say no.
