You Looked Down on Me Once, Now You Look Up. novel Chapter 544

Jackson thought about it for a moment before finally speaking up, his words coming out slow and hesitant. “Maybe I should just forget about the five hundred grand. I mean, she did give birth to me, right? Guess that makes us even. From now on, I just won’t send her any more money.”

“She probably won’t ask again anyway,” he added, trying to convince himself.

Marian let out a snort, her laugh sharp and sarcastic. “See, this is why people say men have a few screws loose.”

“She came running to you for the down payment, didn’t she? Just wait—let’s see if she tries again for renovation money.”

And of course, Marian was right. About a week later, Cecilia called again, still going on about how broke she was and now asking for money to fix up the place. But this time, Patricia answered the phone.

Patricia didn’t bother being nice. Her voice was cold as ice—she didn’t even give Cecilia a chance to explain, just snapped back with a string of insults and threats.

Later, Jackson dragged himself back from the main house and flopped down on the sofa in the guest house, staring up at the ceiling like he was searching for answers.

Just thinking about his empty wallet made his head throb.

Aiden noticed the fresh red marks across Jackson’s cheeks and asked carefully, “Did your wife smack you?”

It was a fair question. Around Cloud Peak, the only one who dared lay a hand on Jackson was Patricia.

Even Mr. Padilla, at his angriest, wouldn’t slap him in the face.

“Yeah,” Jackson replied, sounding way too chill about it.

“She actually slapped your face?” Aiden pressed.

That got Jackson’s attention. He shot upright, glaring. “So what if she did? If she’s bold enough to slap me today, she’ll take over the world tomorrow. I’m sticking with her for life, and I’ll be loyal till the end!”

Aiden just stared at him, totally speechless. This guy was a walking firecracker. Might as well go blow up the planet while he’s at it.

“Take it easy, don’t stress yourself out,” Marian said as she tidied up the study, gently patting Patricia’s back to calm her down.

“We should go talk to Cecilia. What does her son do again?”

“I think he studied abroad, and now he’s a manager at some five-star hotel.”

“If he’s already a manager, they can’t be that hard up for money. Why does he need help to buy a house?”
